More Than BBQ To Bring You Here. One of the really nice things about this simple little BBQ joint is that there is a nice variety of choices, especially on the weekend, when their BBQ Chicken is available. Saturday we stopped in to pick up some of their excellent Coarse Chopped BBQ and BBQ Slaw for the coming week - makes a perfect, quick low carb lunch at the office. We decided to have an early lunch there, and wanted to try something other than barbecue. Alice decided on the Grilled Chicken Salad ($7.39), and I settled on a Chili Dog all-the-way ($2.09) and a Chili Cheeseburger ($3.19) with mustard, chili, and their regular slaw. No FFs here, they're just not good. The Grilled Chicken Salad (which we'd not tried before, cause, you know, this is a BBQ Joint) was a most pleasant surprise - very well sized, loaded with perfectly grilled, tasty chicken breast, plenty of fresh greens and veggies, and a delicious, tart, house made Blue Cheese Dressing. We'd come here just for the salad, especially on those days when a salad is the perfect lunch. The Chili Dog here is one of my favorites, and I often get it all-the-way because their white slaw is absolutely excellent - creamy, with a nice touch of pepper - turns the chili dog in to a true "Slaw Dog" that folks in WV would love. This is a messy dog, as it should be. The Chili Cheeseburger (often referred to as a Carolina style burger) was also something I'd not order before, but I sure will - this is a great version - with everything melding together to make a great diner style burger, and the price is definitely right. They offer daily plate specials for lunch, and on Monday that have Country Fried Steak - not sure if that is actually Country Style Steak, or if it is Chicken Fried Steak - just have to come and try it out soon. 24 Jan, 2015 Still Smoking With Wood. I've wanted some good, really good, Lexington style barbecue with some good, really good, red "barbecue" slaw - Alice agreed, and it was off to Clark's. This was to be a mini food adventure, restricted in scope, distance, and without a hint of novelty. Since it was Saturday, Clark's excellent BBQ Chicken was available, and we added a pound of their Coarse Chopped BBQ ($9.99), a pound of their Sliced BBQ ($9.99), a pint of Barbecue Slaw ($1.99), and a pint of Cole Slaw. Since we were in the area, we picked up a pound of Prissy Polly's cue, as well - except for breakfast, we now had the week end meals covered, along with several lunches for the office next week - kinda cool! The BBQ Chicken ($7.05 or for 1/2 a chicken with a side and HPs) is just available Fri & Sat, and it is among the very best in the state, imo. The chicken is cooked slowly over hardwood coals just like the pork shoulders, and is sauced with their house, vinegar based sauce - no thick, sweet red sauce on this bird! It is tender, smoky, and simply delicious. The sides here are especially good, I'd stick with one of the versions of slaw, and especially avoid the FFs. They cook pork shoulders here, and they cook it slowly over real hardwood coals, and the BBQ comes out tender, moist, smoky, and simply excellent - you have to go inside the Lexington city limits, or Shelby, or Granite Quarry to find any better, and those are few in number. The Sliced BBQ is very good for a sandwich, especially when liberally sauced and barbecue slaw is piled on. THe Coarse Chopped BBQ is a particular favorite of mine because it is a nice mixture of chunks of "Outside Brown" with the extra smokiness and flavor that brings, and chunks of the moist, tender inside area - this is outstanding BBQ! Not the best choice for a sandwich because of those chunks, but experiment, and bring napkins. Both slaw versions here are very good - the mayo based has a little tartness to it that I reall like. The barbecue slaw is one of my very favorites - it is tart, a hint of sweetness, and never watery. The slaw here always tastes fresh, never carried over. Great little BBQ joint , been around since 1993, and getting better. The service is always friendly, with the occasional distracted moment. 17 Jun, 2011 They Still Pit Cook Their Pig. Clark's pork BBQ is well above average - it is nicely chopped, has some real flavor, smokey - they still cook with wood here. The BBQ comes out of the kitchen well sauced, and there is more on the table. They offer chopped or coarse, and both white & BBQ slaw - The white slaw is a little on the sweet side. The BBQ is massive, a two handed grip is required. Their BBQ Chicken, which is just served on the weekends, is excellent, and benefits from the sauce served with it. It is not the sweet, tomato ketchup type sauce you find with most bbq chiken - it is smokey, with a nice vinegar taste. I like this, and put it up there with the three Lexington BBQ joints that serve a great bbq chicken, as well. They serve you a full half a chicken for $6.75. The hush puppies are good, not too sweet. They serve some nice pork ribs on Thursday - Saturday. They also offer some nice veggies daily, more variety than most NC BBQ joints. The fried okra, fried squash, pintos with raw onion, and limas are great - so is the Mac & Cheese, if you eat early. The hot dog here is very good, good chili, and on a toasted bun.Service is very good usually, but can be a little slow at peak times...

Surprise find. Always on the lookout for BBQ when we travel, we happened on this spot on our way to Myrtle Beach. Good food and good service are a rare treat these days. The course chopped pork BBQ was excellent (Lexington style, I'll let other argue the success of different styles). My wife took our kids outside to get wiggles out (4 hrs in a car) and the waitress saw her outside and asked if she needed refill on her drink and told her the food was coming. To top it off, the 20-something waitress even knew who Robert Plant was..
