A truly authentic Japanese dining experience amongst the many Korean operated ones in Sydney. I was looking for an authentic Japanese restaurant that doesnt break the bank. It was located at an obscure location, it was relatively easy to find paid parking nearby. The neighbouring restaurant had outdoor seating, whilst izakaya Fujiyama doesnt, so I thought it was closed until I walked closer to find out it was lively inside. The drinks menu was large, as expected for an izakaya, staff were extremely helpful in aiding us to decide on our drinks. They had the basic selection of sushi and cooked dishes, but it wouldve been nice to get some yakitori to have with the alcohol. Nigiri Fresh fish over airy and extra firm rice, textbook nigiri that will blow away any Korean operated sushi stores.Agedashi tofu I left mine to soak for way too long, so it turned soggy. Otherwise it wouldve textbook replication of the dish. Karaage Marinating the chicken pieces before frying wouldve made it tastier. Grilled salmon head Wonderful fatty Salmon head that is grilled over fire for some smoky notes. Good but tricky to eat. Kingfish tataki It was underwhelming, kingfish just vanishes into the salad.Fujiyama snickers solid dessert but the yellow cream, that I suspect to be yuzu, had an off flavour, almost metallic.Pina Colada literally tastes like an apple pie, but I enjoyed every part of it.
Went here with my besties one Thursday evening because Jazsushi was closed. It was a nice quiet place with great service. The staff was prompt and polite. Ordered:1. Spicy calamari2. Mushrooms with chilli3. Miso salmon4. Salmon avo hand roll5. Edamame6. King fish, Salmon, Mackerel NigiriWith 2×3 drinks. The bill was $130, Little expensive but the food was good. The calamari and mushrooms were outstanding! Will definitely visit again.
