Dine among the vines. Tasmania doesn’t seem to have developed its cellar door operations to the level that many vineyards in the Yarra Valley or even the Mornington Peninsula have. Not surprising, since Tassie is less-traveled than the mainland. That’s especially true for this far-flung part of the Tamar wine region. The cellar door at Piper’s Brook is in a pleasant setting — from the hilltop part of the vineyard, you can get a glimpse of the open waters on the Bass Strait — and it’s got a woodsy, rustic look. Pastries and coffee were up to typically decent Australian standards (which means that a beverage operation that’s almost an afterthought still has better java than North American places that are supposedly coffee specialists.)It’s just too bad that Piper’s Brook, which puts some quality wines behind its upper-end labels, and the Jansz sparkling winemakers nearby don’t have enough trade to support a full-on food spot. They’ve got the class and location, location, location. If only they had the customers!
