I often dream of these burgers when I’m away, and have been known to add 90 minutes onto my trip to the snow just to pass through Bairnsdale and get a burger (or two) at George’s. We used to get them on the way to the snow as kids, and they’re still exactly the same – delicious! The plain burger is my favourite – can’t mess with that simplistic perfection!
I have known about George’s hamburgers for years and I have never really been a big fan.Always under seasoned and the ingredients and effort are always underwhelming.I have only been twice in the last year when visiting family. The first time the burger ‘with the lot’ was missing the beetroot and pineapple (both were specifically asked for). Leaving the under seasoned patty (tasted like plain beef mince), tomato, lettuce in a toasted bun.Very plain. Very average. Very overpriced. The second time (tonight), I ordered a chicken kebab. I asked specifically if they had tzatziki sauce and if I could have extra on the kebab. To which they said that they did and that it was no problem. So I ended up receiving a kebab wrap with lettuce (no dressing or seasoning), a tiny slice of tomato somewhere towards the bottom and a handful of dry over cooked chicken pieces (unseasoned). None if it was seasoned or dressed. No tzatziki or sauce of any description. It was just a dry, tasteless, warm chicken salad wrap. Yummo!!Will not be going back for another ‘chance’.
We bought take out from this ‘famous’ place tonight whilst on break in the gippsland area. Great old school shop and old school menu. Chips were ok a little pricey (6.30 for a large bag) they were thin cut chips , chunkier ones would have been nicer. My husband ordered a burger with the lot and he said while it was a good burger it was no Andrews ( South melb) . I had the steak sandwich which was nice . Steak was a little over done . Burger buns have sesame seeds so seed allergics ( like me ) be warned ! Meal was tasty however burger had pitiful amount of lettuce as did the steak sandwich . George’s could do with a refresh to keep this old school dream alive
Hit the craving. We thoroughly enjoyed delicious and well cooked chicken and lamb sovulakis. Definitely met our cravings for a decent sovulaki! Thanks George!
There’s a George’s Burgers magnet on my fridge door; pity it’s a three-hour drive from my place! I got to know about George’s when one of my jobs meant that every 8 weeks I had to be in East Gippsland. I found their burgers to be spot-on; fresh patties, generous with the egg and bacon, and crisp salad. But the reason I’ve been known to detour to Bairnsdale on a Canberra-Melbourne drive – instead of taking the Hume Highway – is for the Scotch Fillet Steak Sandwiches at George’s! If you’re a fan of Embassy Taxi Burgers, or Andrew’s Burgers in Melbourne, then you should appreciate George’s Burgers if you’re travelling to East Gippsland. Dial ahead!
