Tried the Haru Winter Special: Korean Style Spicy Beef Soup Set. Soup was a bit bland. It was a nice set but bit overpriced for what is worth.
This is a small but neat shop located in Gastown serving a menu of popular Korean eats. It seems to be quite a popular place; almost the entire restaurant was filled when I visited during lunch time, although fortunately, the shop did clear out a bit after shortly after. I had their Kimchi & Pork Jeon, Crispy & Cruncy Chicken Nuggets, and Jap-Chae Noodle + Beef. The food was fairly good and the prices are reasonable. The service is quite efficient, although the staff is not the most attentive. All in all, while this doesn’t beat out places like So Hyang, it is still worth checking out for some decent Korean food.Kimchi & Pork Jeon ($14.50):3/5They offer several varieties of pancake; this one contained kimchi and pork. Now, I’m not the biggest fan of kimchi (I think it’s more of an acquired taste), and this really didn’t do anything to change my mind. I will say however, if you do like kimchi, then you’ll probably appreciate this dish as they do put quite a bit of it in the pancake. I couldn’t find any of the pork however. More importantly, I found the pancake to be a bit too soft and soggy; a few pieces were crispy but others were very soft and fell apart when I tried picking them up. This isn’t bad, but it’s not nearly as good as the pancake from a place like So Hyang.Crispy & Crunchy Chicken Nuggets ($10):4/5This came with eight good sized pieces of chicken that’s drizzled with spicy sauce and is garnished with chopped nuts and pumpkin seeds. The chicken was very meaty, tender and juicy, while the batter was quite light and crispy. I did find it to be a tad on the bland side however. The chopped nuts were a very nice touch.Jap-Chae Noodle + Beef ($13 + $2):4/5You have the option of adding meat to your dish for an extra $2; I decided to add beef. The noodles had a nice chewy texture and was flavourful, being sweet without being overly so. I also quite enjoyed the beef, which was tender and had a flavourful sweet marinade.Summary:Food: 3.5/5Price: 4/5Service: 3/5Overall: 3.5/5Recommendations: Crispy & Crunchy Chicken Nuggets, Jap-Chae
Good little spot for lunch. Enjoyed the lunch special which was a generous portion of stirfried spicy squid, pork and veg, with rice and 3 side dishes for $15. I normally try to spend less at lunch but the serving size was generous and it was tasty.
Welcomed Addition to GastownWent for dinner last night with a friend. Had the Kimchi and Pork Gyoza and the Chicken and Lotus Root Special that came to about $20 per person. The Gyoza had a weird filling texture – more like tasteless Ricotta than Pork and Kimchi. However, the Special was delicious and came with three cold sides and rice. The Chicken was fall off the bone but the dish could have used more Lotus Root and skipped the mushy Carrot. The Soy sauce, Ginger, Sugar broth was rich in flavor and was enjoyable over the riceService was sleepy but I will be coming back. I like what they did with the space (before the space used to be an African cafe that looked totally suspect) and I’m curious to try out more menu items.
Great little Korean gem in the heart of gastown with tasteful decor and homestyle Korean food. I shared the hot stone bibimbap and japchae with my dining partner–both excellent. The food is subtly and delicately seasoned. Cooked with love. Well priced. We will definitely be back.
An amazing homestyle Korean restaurant with tasty and unique dishes. The dcor was really nice and the vibe was very warm and welcoming. I like their focus on making alot of their sauces and other things which are normally outsourced by hand. It’s almost like you can taste the time and effort they put into their food. My wife and I loved the fish roe stone bowl rice and the braised spicy pork ribs. The savoury sauce of the pork ribs and the excellent texture of the multigrain rice went perfectly together. A great place to try and indeed one of the best Korean meals I’ve had in this city. Highly recommended!
