2019/04/08I am back in Ottawa for a few days, and I headed to Byward Market for dinner at The Smoque Shack. Its large restaurant with seating for about 100. When I showed up before 6:30 pm it was less than half full, and I chose a table near the back of the restaurant, passed the bar. Although the table was clean, the finish has aged a bit and it looks a bit grimy. The menu is essentially a la carte. I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich ($12) and Onion Rings ($6). The Carolina-style pork was tender and savoury, in a small pile on the fresh Ace Bakery bun. The sauce was tangy with a touch of sweetness. The sandwich was served with a small plastic cup of creamy coleslaw. The dressing also had a little bit of sweetness. The rings were a bit different than the usual beer battered variety that are available at many restaurants. While the coating probably had a beer batter base, I think they also added some fine bread crumbs that gave it a different texture. Also, they were dusted with herbs and a house blend of spices that gave it a bit of heat, mostly from paprika, I think. I really liked the rings. Service was petty good.
