As a consumer of fried chicken for over 65 years, I know a thing or two about good fried chicken.I dined at Chicken Express and ordered the 2 piece Combo Meal.You get to choose which two pieces either breast, thigh, leg or two of each. This is a better choice than just white or dark meat.I ordered a breast and a thigh with a side of cole slaw. It comes with a biscuit and I ordered an extra bisquit ($.49).The chicken was very crispy and very good in size. The biscuits were good but not as tasty as some other chicken restaurants. The cole slaw was very good with a good mixture of slaw and carrots.The service was good and the order came out timely.One customer (a return visitor) asked for special directions on the preparation of the chicken tenders and one of the cooks came up front to accommodate the request. Nice to see personal service.The restaurant has easy access from Mansfield Road or Colquitt Road.

Regional chicken chain moves in across from legendary local chicken chain on Mansfield Rd. Located almost directly across the street from Southern Classic you know they’ve got guts. And for good reason, Chicken Express has a good product with some distinct differences along with some commonalities with their neighbor. CE’s chicken is more crispy, not unlike KFC’s extra crispy in texture. CE’s is also noticeably less greasy than SC. I’d still give SC an edge in taste as it has more flavorful spices going on. CE has some advantages thou, they have a larger menu featuring hot wings, tenders and even catfish. CE also has a small dining area, no seating at SC. They do share two very good attributes, better service and prices than the national chains. My only complaint about CE was the sides. The mashed potatoes were obviously from a mix and served without gravy, the Mac and cheese was pretty bad itself both in flavor and appearance. It’s great to see all the new construction in the area, now if they could move past just fast food joints…
