Below-average barbecue on Cross Lake. Good barbecue can be hard to find in Shreveport, for some reason, so I like to try every new place that I can. Unfortunately, Mitchell’s BBQ out on South Lakeshore Drive is not going to going to be raising the very low bar that has been set locally. I visited on a Thursday night figuring that, since that’s the first night of the week that they’re open for business, the meat would be hot off of the smoker. Instead, I believe I probably ate Sunday’s meat. The brisket showed its age the most obviously. It was dried-out and, honestly, it was really just roast beef – if it had ever been exposed to smoke, I couldn’t taste it. The ribs literally crumbled into pieces when I picked them up, and had been reheated too long in a microwave, so they were impossible to taste for a few minutes. Sausage was bland commercial sausage that, again, didn’t taste of smoke. Beans and potato salad lacked any character whatsoever, and probably came out of a tub from Sam’s Club or something along those lines. It was a bit of a drive out there, so I’d hoped to enjoy something, even if it was just the atmosphere, but no dice.
