JG score of 4/10 today.2 our of 3 for the entree= the Beef & Chicken Gyro Combo Platter was very good and filling. The White Sauce was very tasty too. We got our sauce separate and added it and the Hot Sauce as needed and this helped. The Hummus was good, the Falafel was okay, the Baba Ganoush was not good and the Baklava was tasty.0/2 for the atmosphere that was new but generic.1/1 for the price about $15.0/1 for no Diet Dr Pepper.0/1 for typical service.1/2 for we would get it again sometime.
Another New York City born chain comes to Shreveport in The Halal Guys. What started as a food cart has grown into a large chain of Mediterranean / Middle Eastern fast casual restaurants. Till recently Shreveport has lacked in the ethnic diversity available foodwise you might expect for a town its size, still does but things are changing. Unfortunately it seems when the area does get a new food variety then more of the same follows instead of a differing genre. The Halal Guys follows Taziki’s, Pita De’ novo, Pita Pit as well as more traditional restaurants like Gyro Gyro and Athena’s into the Greek / Mediterranean market. They are however the first to offer Halal meat, a certification that it has been raised and butchered according to Islamic law.So how does it stack up to the competition? For such hype about hours long lines in NYC I wasn’t blown away but it was good. The chicken was moist and tender, the rice very flavorful thou dry. The beef gyro had good flavor but like the rice was quite dry. The highly touted white sauce was just OK, I prefer Pita De’ novo’s version. The humus was good and I loved the full fresh baked pita, much better than the dry pieces included in the combo meal. Service was quick and friendly, the place clean and bright with tables available inside and out, no food cart here. With yet another Pita Pit scheduled to open soon as well as the existing Mediterranean options I’m not sure they all will survive but maybe. People in the area are slowly warming up to new kinds of foods and to healthier options. The Halal Guys seem to downplay the religious aspects of the food, a good move seeing as there is a very small Muslim population locally. The menu is more limited than the other restaurants mentioned but they are also quicker. I’ll be curious to see how this plays out.UPDATE:How it plays out is they closed in a year and a half. Had they researched better they would have found the Greek Mediterranean market flooded here and with better food than they could offer. Somebody believes their own hype and thought they could take over the market…
