Finally a fresh approach to dining in Shreveport! The Levee is truly unique from creative dishes and beverages to their custom built furnishings and art, The Levee has something new and wonderful to offer. The owners are new to the restaurant scene, a rarity for the area and part of the reason we have such a stale dining environment. What they lack in experience they make up for in passion and creativity. They have also surrounded themselves with some great people that they source products from so they arent doing it on their own. Go in expecting a laidback lounge, almost old school super club attitude but in a fresh modern atmosphere. This isnt the kind of place you go to rush through a meal, go with the idea you may sit and talk a while, try a dish or two, have some dessert and coffee and just enjoy yourself. The menu may be small but for good reason, as my wife put it, there is no filler here, everything is on the menu purposefully. Still waiting on a liquor license they have created some sensational mocktails from their cool mobile bar cart. I suggest enjoying one while they prepare your food. Everything we have tried on the menu has been very good and original too. The Thai inspired soup is an awesome starter. Full of great Asian flavors and served with true Key Limes, its perfect on a cool day. I cant wait to try the veggie gumbo, I hear it is amazing. If you are stopping in for breakfast they do a terrific breakfast wrap made from your choice of fresh ingredients including vegetables and herbs from their own gardens. Check out the Fleur-de-lis shaped waffle available with hemp seeds and walnuts and even Highland Creamery ice cream! The foundation for many of the entrees is smoked meats and oh boy have they hit the mother lode here! Their pit master has the kind of talents with a smoker that has been absent from the local area till now. The smoked chicken used in the chicken salad makes the dish a cut above any Ive tried in town including some famous ones. The brisket and ribs are simply on par with the best competition meats Ive had. I believe you can tell even from my pictures that these are different than what is available elsewhere locally. Great smoke flavor throughout without the smoke overwhelming the meats. Not the least bit dry, they dont sacrifice tenderness or flavor to retain juiciness. A great dry rub seals the deal. The sheet-cake with ice cream dessert is off the charts especially accompanied by a French press of coffee. A Word Of Warning:Before reviews start coming in complaining about slow service or the odd seating etc. Just know, as I said, these guys are new to the business and the start up kinks that plague any new restaurant may be more obvious here because of that. Sure I applaud excellence and expect restaurateurs to offer a great experience but I would argue that that is exactly what is taking shape here. There are serve limitations due to the lack of a full kitchen but that makes what they have achieved all the more impressive. Only time will tell if they can take this gift they have for making incredible food and become legit restaurateurs. Will they need a new location, a trained staff and experience to pull it off? Of course. Do I recommend waiting till then to sample their food? No Way, go now, go often!
