It was a typical busy Friday night in Lincolns Haymarket and the crowd at Hiro 88 was steady, the vibe was good. We ordered a nigiri sushi appetizer of Unagi and Triple Belly. Both were good but arrived after soup and salad – a bit late in our opinion. Our entrees of Miso Marinated Sea Bass and Unagi Don were excellent. Service was likely off because of an inexperienced new server, but she was polite and pleasant. Another solid performance by one of the better run restaurants in this dining category. Weve always been pleased here.
Absolutely amazing. My friend and I were in tonight for happy hour. We were so pleased with our drinks and meal. We had multiple appetizers and rolls, and everything was fantastic. The squid salad was delicious, and the gyoza was perfectly pan fried. But the best part were the rolls. The Hiro Crunch was our favorite. The best part was that one of the owners, Stanley, treated us so well. He made our meal very memorable. I will definitely be back!
Decent food but the experience was ruined by a horribly rude manager and the servers talking about how trashed they were going to get to the bartenders.
I can be your hiro, baby. I’m kind of a fan of Hiro 88. Stink bombs or not.Ambiance: The apples outside the bathroom are pretty neat. I always wonder how long they leave them up there before they go bad. The tables in the front area are far too close together. It’s noisy and there’s no way to have an intimate conversation if the tables are full. The last blind date I went on there, I felt like I was sitting in the lap of the lady who was supposed to be at the table next to ours. It was awkward.Drink: The wait staff is quite helpful in recommending pairings. The sake carafes look like bongs. At least what I imagine a bong would look like.Food: The lunch bento boxes are kind of a favorite of mine. I’m not a huge fan of all the plain rice, but the spicy tuna roll and spicy salmon rolls are delicious if not traditional. I love seaweed salad, and they have a nice portion with tasty dressing. I do wish they had a chili paste instead of just sriracha. In the evening, I like to be adventurous and order whatever the chef wants to make…and mostly everything has been delicious. The wait staff also seems to be very skilled in knowing the menu and making suggestions on what is particularly delicious that season. The miso is much better than I’ve had in other Japanese restaurants. I do like this restaurant, and will be back soon…now please come to SE Lincoln?
My wife and I enjoyed an early Saturday evening dinner (prior to attending the Elton John concert) at this new restaurant in Lincoln’s West Haymarket. It was a superior experience from start to finish. We made our reservations about a week before the event. The day before I received a friendly reminder call regarding our reservation with value added in cautioning us to be aware of the parking issues in the Haymarket and the need to arrive with enough time and that they were requesting no more than a 90 minute dining time – both of those were expected on a busy concert night. The caller was pleasant and professional and I appreciated the contact. The night we arrived we were promptly seated at our table, right off the sushi kitchen. Jessica, our server, welcomed us to the restaurant, asked us a few key questions to determine our knowledge of Hiro 88 and our plans for the night, and then proceeded to take our drink and appetizer order. She was patient, knowledgeable, and friendly – a nice start. We got comfortable right away with our choice of where to dine. Now we’d see how the rest of the meal went.We ordered sushi and sashimi for appetizers and a bottle of Justin Cabernet 2011 for our wine. The sushi (freshwater eel) was excellent. Our sashimi (mackeral and fatty tuna) was artfully sliced, served, and beautifully garnished. Both were high quality sashimi. I was quite impressed. Our meal started with Miso soup and salad. I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass with a Miso glaze and my wife ordered the Braised Scallops (Jessica was very helpful in our menu navigation and questions). We really enjoyed both of them – done to perfection, light, very flavorful, and very attractively served.I was celebrating my birthday and Jessica surprised us with an offer of chocolate cake. I’m usually skeptical of restaurant desserts – but this one was outstanding! And the freshly brewed cup of dark coffee made it all the more wonderful. What a fantastic finish to a superior dining experience. Hiro 88 is a strong contender for the best new restaurant in the Lincoln dining scene!
Wasn’t great. Flavor was good, but one piece of roll had just shrimp tail, no edible bit. The rolls also didn’t stay together well, several pieces fell apart before I could even get them off the plate.
Amazing!
