Going Down Hill. First of all I have to say that prior to my last experience at JTK I had truly enjoyed the atmosphere and meals there multiple times before and I think the Date Night is a great value. However, I had such a horrible experience last time that I do not think I will ever go back. My wife and I, as well as our families have dined at JTK many times and have really liked the relaxing atmosphere. We have gone to JTK for occasions ranging from birthday celebrations to family gatherings after the passing of a loved one and pre-deployment send-offs. This goes to show how one horrible experience can ruin a business. Our last experience was to celebrate a new job for a family member who is now moving away so it was a special occasion and we had a party of 9. It started out bad right from the start and 99% of it was due to the service. Our waiter was rude, abrupt, and neglectful from word one. I got up to walk to the bar and order drinks for people and I wanted to make sure nobody had ordered anything yet so I asked him. He informed me in a confrontational manner that no, I am your waiter and there has not been a drink order made. I could have easily gotten past this but it continued. He refused to bring me the cocktail menu after I had asked and he returned only to tell me the selection of higher priced whiskeys. On to the food… Most all of us wanted to order off of the Date Night menu for couples. He had given us 2 Date Night menus for 9 people and became irritated when I asked for more menus. He asked how many more and I said at least 3, so all he brings is 2 more menus so now we have 5 menus for 9 people. So finally we begin to order. My mother-in-law wanted to order wine and appetizers first (which we have done in the past) and he rudely informed us that we could not do that and we had to order our soups and salad first. So we appeased him and complied with his rigid order structure. Then my mother-in-law asked him if she could substitute something instead of rice. He (once again abruptly and rudely) said I dont know! What do you want She asked if they could substitute risotto and he complied but stated that there would be an upcharge. (Skipping ahead she did not get the risotto but the rice, and the upcharge was on the bill). So after taking our order our waiter disappears for at least 20 minutes returning only to tell us that they are out of the appetizers we ordered. When asked what our other options are, he very rudely and abruptly stated the other ones in the menu…. The menus that we no longer have at the table. We finally got him to tell us what the other appetizers were and we re-ordered (this is now pushing an hour since we arrived). He then began to walk away and I tried to ask him for water refills but when I said excuse me Sir he threw his hand up and said just wait, Ill be back! When he finally returned with the water pitcher he filled 2 out of 9 glasses and then left. Next time he showed up to our table we asked if he could leave a pitcher of water for us to which he responded that they are not allowed to do that… really? They are not allowed to leave a pitcher of water??? Normally at JTK we are brought bread right away and we still had not seen any bread. When I asked if we could get some bread he became irritated once again and informed me abruptly that the bread does not come until the soup and salad. So finally I had enough of this abuse by our waiter and I went to find the manager. I asked a group of employees at the bar if I could speak to the manager and one of them said that he would speak with me. I asked him to speak to me in the hall where I tried to summarize our awful dining experience. He asked if I wanted him to get us a different waiter and I told him that I would leave that to his discretion. He assured me that this would be taken care of. Since I was already in full complaint mode, I told him that just as an FYI, everyone at the table who got a Caesar salad thought it was the worst they had ever tasted. To fix this, he sends me another Caesar salad after I already had my entree (because 2 horrible tasting salads evidently are better than one). So after speaking with the manager on duty I return to the table only to be served desert by the same hostile waiter with the same hostile attitude, nothing changed. We all agreed that not only were we not able to enjoy our meal but we felt insulted, that this was the worst service any of us had ever experienced and it was almost all due to the hostile attitude of the waiter. Then the bill comes (with the upcharge for the risotto that was never provided) and I sort of thought as a nice gesture that they would have comped a portion of our bill or maybe the manager would ask if we wanted a complimentary desert or something. NOTHING! Now I am normally very empathetic towards servers. I do not think they have an easy job and I do not think they are here to be my servant as I have seen some people do. But I was fed up and asked the manager to come over to the table and speak with everyone. We all voiced the same concerns and he finally comped one meal out of 9. Really this is not about the money to me but the disappointment we all had at a restaurant we used to truly enjoy and shared great memories at. Sorry for the long rant but we were highly insulted by this server and the way the manager handled the situation. I do not think that any of our family will ever go back to JTK after this. If the owners of JTK would like to discuss this with me please reply and I would be glad to speak with you. I highly recommend Vincensos or Lazlos instead; service at both of those establishments is ALWYAS top notch.

Very Dissapointing. We had a reservation, and arriving on time, my party had to wait another 30 minutes to be seated. We were asked by many different serving staff that came to the reservation book if we had a reservation. I explained many times we did only to be told that they were setting the table. When we finally were seated and ordered drinks and appetizers, we received drinks fairly soon, however the appetizers arrived about 20 minutes later. We waited another 40 minutes for our salad. When I finally asked our server if our salads were ready, she immediately brought them. The person at our table who ordered the onion soup said the soup was cold. Within 10 minutes the server brought our entrees, however they were also cold, the steak, garlic potatoes as well as the chicken and garlic potatoes and sauce were not even warm. We sent the food back, when it was returned, it was warm, but not hot. When we were almost finished with our meal our server brought our bread. We got the bill, and after 2 1/2 hours in Jtk we left. While walking out, one of the servers behind the bar asked if we enjoyed the meal. We certainly did not, not only was our server not apologetic, but there was also no reduction on the price of the meal for our inconvenience. When I eat at a restaurant with the reputation of jtk, I expect to be waited on in a timely fashion, have warm food, and excellent service. We do not live in Lincoln, and made a specific trip to try jtk based on reviews about the great fine dining experience. I will not return! There are other places to go to for a fine dining experience, where the service is better and the food is hot.

Special Night. Special Food. It had been awhile since I had been back to Jtk. I was impressed before and was not disappointed this time. We tried one of Jtk’s wine pairing evenings and we were very impressed! Five courses and five outstanding wines from the nearby retailer Bin 105. Each course was beautifully plated. The food was creative, delicious and at times surprising. Only one of a trio of desert items fell short of the mark. Some quibbles with some lag time between courses, but overall, an outstanding evening.

Great Food. The lamb and the steak are great, I don’t use that word freely. This is a very nice place. I will continue to dine there.

Amazing service. I couldn’t disagree more with the idea that jtk has poor service. We go there regularly specifically because the service is the best we’ve ever had at nearly any restaurant we’ve ever been to. It’s professional without being stuffy; direct and informative and knowledgeable. Oh, and the food is amazing. Not only is the kobe beef phenomenal, the duck, other steaks, pork and even the sandwiches are excellent. And the soups are wonderful, too. I once had a pumpkin ice cream at a special wine-tasting dinner that I still crave. And I haven’t even mentioned the wine list or the atmosphere. All are top rate. This is a restaurant made for very special meals, but also a wonderful weeknight dinner. We wouldn’t think of going anywhere else in Lincoln for a special dinner out.
