AUTHENTIC Cuban food. I just stopped in for a late lunch, expecting to be disappointed with a watered down imitation of latin food. I was very surprised – this tasted like something my grandmother made. I cannot wait to go back – I only hope this place doesn’t get too crazy once enough people hear about it.
Delicious Inexpensive Latin Food. This is a great and incredible new place and a welcome addition to this area of Newark. When I passed by after unfortunately haven eaten at another place about a month ago, they were deserted. I was determined to pay them a visit after having grabbed a menu for the next time I was in Newark. When I returned with a coworker for lunch a couple weeks later, they were packed! Seriously, we were lucky to get a table at 12:45. They were packed for good reason too. Their food is great, the service is quick, they’re cheap and most importantly, their cooking rocks! The food is Latin/Caribbean and is wonderfully prepared. You walk in, order at the manned steam table and just a few minutes later you’re eating mass quantities of really incredible Latin food. They’re open from 8 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and they feature package deals of entrees served with two sides for $6.50 + tax. I got the delicious pernil with sides of Moro rice and tostones. The pernil was just about mind shattering and moist with chunks of tasty pork and shards of wonderfully crisp pork skin, akin to the roasted turkey skin you get at Thanksgiving family dinners. The tostones were thick and crispy and the Moro rice was savory and filling. I almost could not finish! My friend got the Thursday special, pastelon. It’s kind of like a Latin lasagna of seasoned ground beef, platanos maduros and Swiss cheese with sauce. Sounded kind of gross to me, but she loved it and just about everyone who was lined up here ordered it so it must be good (see pics to witness what it looks like). Her side of yellow rice with pigeon peas and black beans also looked great. They also serve great looking sandwiches here such as the Cuban and the pan con lechon. You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be eating here and trying their other stuff every time I’m back in this part of Newark! The employees are all as nice as can be with lots of personality and this place is just a delightful experience overall. Thanks for saving me from Subway, Mi Gente!
