A rare experience. It is great to find a restaurant that serves entrees that cover the needs of a vegetarian who is also gluten intolerant and yet is upscale. The Commonwealth fit all of these. I took my wife who is the above out on our anniversary so I wanted to find a nice place but was hard put to find a place whose menu would fit the bill. The Commonwealth did so beautifully with a wonderful atmosphere, a friendly staff (thank you Ameer), and great food. My wife had an appetizer of the bean empenadas with guacamole dip, grilled portabella mushrooms and followed by home made butterscotch pudding which was all wonderfully cooked and quite flavorful. I had the chicken lollipops (very nicely spiced) with mango sauce followed by the Peruvian Lamb stew and beignets for dessert. All of which were very tasty. Everything put together for a wonderful evening, worthy of our 21st wedding aniversary.
Overrated. Commonwealth is getting stale. The food has always been average and overpriced. But the location and Sky Bar made up for it.But the kitchen has fallen in the past few months. It is now below average, but just as pricey. There is something going on there. Regular workers are all leaving.Would not be surprised to hear that it has sold with new ownership coming in 2014.
Excellent. Great food!Cheese and meat platters are fantastic with a bottle of red wine. Main courses are also very good and cooked with skill. Service is professional and attentive.Try the sky bar for drinks before dinner.Great place but be prepared to drop $100 for 2.
Everything on the Menu was Great!. We went to the downtown Charlotsville strip, and walked up and down looking for a place to eat. We first stopped at Commonwealth, and looked at the promising menu. We went all the way to the other end of the downtown strip, and then came right back, after looking at many menus. We were so right to do so! We ordered spicy black bean soup, really good, really spicy; the lettuce, parmesan, and mandarin salad, excellent; the rabbit crepe, my son’s favorite; the boar entree, our favorite (3 people), and the lamb dish, which was delicious as well. We asked to talk to the manager, just to tell her how much we enjoyed everything there. She told us about the dessert menu, and we were sorry we asked, it sounded so good, and we had no room for anything anymore! In a town with so many great restaurants, Commonwealth stands out, the food is excellent, the wait staff is accommodating and kind, we had a great experience there!
Great place to eat. Enjoyed the rabbit crepe and the lobster and cod fish cakes, but the star of the meal was curried chick peas and mustard greens. I wish all vegetarian dishes were as flavorful as this one.
Excellent Experience!. Unbelievably Good Food! Servce is top notch and the renovations are stunning. The open roof is fun, the food and service are even better. My wife, 8 year old daugher and I went for dinner, executive chef Alex George made a table visit and even brought my daughter fancy fruit drink she loved. My family will return again, and we highly recommend the Commonwealth. David Merriman
Re rude and bad service. These people have no passion for this.
