Gus’ cafe was one of the few establishments open upon our early morning Sunday arrival from Sydney. A big night was evident on the streets of Canberra Civic Centre but dodging the detritus, we stumbled upon the charming little cafe/diner where we made a beeline to get a caffeine fix. The cafe uses their own house blend, and the cappuccino was expertly poured. While typical to be informed of an Amex credit card surcharge, I was a bit surprised by the 10% Sunday surcharge, which when questioned was told was standard in Canberra. $4.95 plus credit card fee is getting up there for a large, standard takeaway coffee where I brought my own cup.

Unfortunately the reopening hasn’t hit the mark. There were flies everywhere, staff sitting around while the empty glasses piled up, waiters grouped up and chatting, and food was mediocre at best. This place has so much potential but there is no attention to detail, staff are busy lounging around or on their phones, and they’re wiping the tables and seats down with dirty cloths and leaving dirty crockery around which attracts many many flies. I couldn’t understand how a newly renovated cafe was so filthy.

Just a standard cafe for breakfast. Nothing special about the menu, but it’s usually cooked pretty well if you’re just looking for an average bacon and eggs kind of thing. Coffee is okay. Service is usually friendly and quick.

Solid big breakfast with all the standard requirements of a big breakfast, bacon, eggs, bread, sausage and mushrooms – you can’t really go wrong but it definitely isn’t a world changer. It was a good breakfast for a rainy winter’s day!

The food is alright but the hygiene of this place is the worst I have seen. If you haven’t seen what their kitchen looks like, guess you wouldn’t feel anything when having their food. However, this isn’t a place I want to go eat again.

Always a pleasant experience at Gus’. Love the ambience in the outside area. The only negative is the menu change- bring back the unique hot chocolates!

I was recommended by a friend to try this cafe and I’m glad I did. It has an unassuming store front, but after walking in, the quaint atmosphere and decor quickly grew on me. I felt really cosy and the staff were friendly. I ordered one of the weekend specials: The Minute Steak Big Breakfast. It was basically a big breakfast but with little tweaks. I enjoyed the tomato relish and the cheesy focaccia was different to the common sourdough you usually get. Meat lovers should try this too, generous portions of bacon, thinly-slices steak and a couple of sausages, topped off with two fried eggs. An excellent and filling breakfast!
