Great Food, Awful Service. I’ve given this a thumbs up for the food alone, which was delicious. Everything else, however was terrible. We were in Canberra on holiday and chose the place on the spur of the moment. Service was pathetically slow. We ordered a set meal each. Quite a while later we were advised that the entree chosen by my partner was actually not available so could he please select something else. He did this and we still waited ages for our entrees. Then my sushi/sashimi main arrived. I waited and waited before starting, but my partner’s main (a hot pork dish) took so long that eventually I started eating. We asked about the pork dish and after a few more minutes it finally came out, only to be beef not pork. The rice, pickled veg and miso came out now as well. By this time the restaurant was almost empty as it was 9.30 and we were starving so we ate it even though it was not the pork ordered. The staff now started to set the tables around us for the next day, as we were the only table left. My green tea never arrived at all, and we sat twiddling our thumbs waiting for my partner’s dessert (an ice cream dish, not exactly complicated to prepare!). When it did come they brought out a different dessert for me as well even though I had said I did NOT want dessert. So it was a shambles from start to finish. The saving grace was the food, which was amazingly good. The staff were overall disinterested and communication from the kitchen was poor as things were stuffed up so much.

We went with 9 people and got a banquet. The service was average but there was a lot of flexility in meeting different needs. The good was good but the experience was average. It was ok but we will try wasabi next time.

Yummy lunch. Been here 4 times now and love the lunch time menu, the Shogun Bento box is a great taste of many different types and I personally love all of the items in it.Tried 2 other Japanese places in Canberra and I love this one, service at lunch time was quick and very polite. After living in Japan for 4 years, this place fits me perfect. Other Japanese places in Canberra may be more flash looking but I can their food is not better and for the budget minded Shogun’s lunch menu is great value.

Not Recommended. Food taste is not good. The place is small and old. I doubt about the cleanness. Price is expensive. It is really not recommended.

Best Japanese in Canberra. This is by far one of the better Japanese restaurants in Canberra. I’ve been here a couple of times and each time has been perfect. I loved sitting at the tables on the floor, enjoying an outstanding Shabu-Shabu. The atmosphere makes you feel as if you are in Japan, and so does the good quality food. The teppenyaki is really good fun and it’s obvious that the chefs are very experienced. The service is extremely prompt and polite.

This rice was made through teppenyaki and was very salty.11 Dec, 2011We also came here to try the teppanyaki. As far as interactivity or entertainment goes, the only activity was having some chopped egg thrown to the mouths of the people at the table. The fried rice was quite salty as mentioned by another reviewer. We choose a $45.90 pp set menu option for teppanyaki which seemed overly expensive for the amount and quality of food served.
