Mekong River is the place to go for super friendly and homestyle Thai cooking and service! Australian-Thai food can often be outrageously sweet and often with added msg. I’ve found that Mekong’s home-style means that the dishes are low in sugar and msg when compared with other Thai outlets in Canberra, and is a very refreshing change from the standard Australian-Thai experience. I also found their menu more varied that other similar places.Vilay is a lovely host who is generous about sharing her stories from home.(I expect that the ‘tastiness’ of the laksa from the Noodle House, re the previous review, is due to their leaning on added msg for flavour as their stock is very high in the additive)
Terrible. I went on a monday for lunch as nothing else was open. I saw they had $10.00 lunch specials. Went inside and saw the normal menu and decided to order the jungle curry for $17.00. For $17.00 I expected it to be good quality, taste good, a decent portion size and of course come with a serving of rice. This was not the case!when the food arrived me and my husband were shocked to see how small the portion was and it did not come with rice! We had to order separate servings of rice! After this me and husband were still hungry so we ordered something off the lunch special menu which turned out to be small serving size but also just as tasteless as the jungle currywill not be going back even if im hungrywould not recommend to anyone
Great restaurant. What a great night and the food and service make you feel like you are back in Vietnam. Highly recommend that if you are missing Vietnam or are planning a visit take the time to taste the food the feeling warmth of a fantastic culture.
A pleasant twist. We had intended to go to the busy Jimmy’s place next door, but after meeting with a rude server who practically shooed us out of the door, we turned to Mekong River – and thank goodness we did!Generous portions, strong yet balanced flavours, combined with warm, friendly and prompt service. We had the Beef Noodle Soup and the Mussaman Beef Curry – having tried the latter in a restaurant prior, I wanted to compare. Needless to say, Mekong’s take on the curry hits the spot in my stomach perfectly!Smooth, creamy curry with undertones of various flavours that tantalise the palate. The beef was so incredibly moist that it was literally falling apart. With a mere tap of the fork, the juicy, tender and satisfying chunks of meat would melt. I have found my new favourite/regular.EDIT: Went there again, a week later for lunch. Got the Mussaman special for lunch – exactly the same as last time, in flavour, texture, balance and overall yumminess.. Definitely a regular..
$10 lunch specials are great. Had pad thai noodles and it was a really decent serving. The service was quite friendly too
New Management. MEKONG RIVER RESTAURANT NOW is new under managementThe price of the food is acceptable for a delicious food such as Pad Thai, Laksa and others Launch menu.Around 10$The food came out so fastTrust me! Visit and taste it by yourself…
Tasty. Pro tip: Mekong is much better than the oily food at the Noodle House next door. Veggies are always fresh and tasty. The noodles are really good.
