I honestly hate giving bad reviews, but the burger was burnt to an inch of its life and all I could taste was charcoal. The chips were also a fair bit over cooked. Although this place looks great on the inside, I think if I return, it would only be for drinks. Sadly I cannot recommend the food here.
On approaching Beer Deluxe, you’d be fooled into thinking you were about to enter your traditional local pub, but don’t be fooled. This place is more than it seems. Though this 5 storey 1939 building (the first ‘high rise’ in Albury) is heritage listed as a rare example of the International/Bauhaus design outside of a capital city, once inside you’re surprised by a spacious fresh modern venue. This hotel has had 4 reincarnations that I’m aware of, yet somehow the owners have managed to renovate while still paying homage to its history. It still incorporates The Cactus Bar and Paddy’s (now the entrance I think), but has updated and expanded. While the central bar is contemporary with stone bench top, steel meshwork, and modern glass lighting, they’ve cleverly balanced it with beautiful timber panelling and seating, and natural greenery helping to provide a warmth often lacking in ‘modern’ venues. They also have ‘The Top Deck’ which is a lovely decking area with petitioned timber panels, bistro chairs and tables, all in a very relaxing neutral palette. This area flows into a large Beer Garden with bar tables/chairs, hanging lights, and faux grass. The back of this area is where live bands (such as Killing Heidi that I saw on Sunday) play, and draw quite a crowd. The restaurant was well priced, with a lot of choice (although slightly limited on vegetarian & GF options) and fast service. E: $9-$15, M: $21-$28 (Steaks $29-$38), D: $10 & kids meals $9 with free dessert. The Beer Battered Fish with sidewinder chips & salad, Spiced Arancini and Chicken Strips with Chilli Mayo were all faultless. The only thing lacking on the menu was stating if their produce is local, organic or non-gm. For the Beer aficionado, the biggest drawcard is their range of Beer, and as their website states ‘Everything they do, they do for Beer’. This is reflected in the ‘Beer Bible’ – 23 pages that explain Beer terminology, definitions, and highlights & explains their range of 150+ (from Lagers, stouts, Belgian, Low Alcohol & Gluten Free). While I’d say there target demographic is young adults (evidenced by the ads for ‘Frat Party’s & Karaoke nights), there is always something on. Other activities include Trivia nights, Humpday $5 drinks (selected), and unique events like ‘lunch with your dog’. Happily, their use of technology is as modern as the venue. They’re on Facebook & Insta, and their website is easy to use, informative, shows full menus, and allows for online bookings (a function many Albury facilities still lack). While parking can be a challenge, they were welcoming and clean with great atmosphere. The only major let down for me was that they allow smoking. Although the beer garden is open-air, all 4 sides are enclosed, and the closeness of the crowd during Killing Heidi, combined with many chain-smoking members of the audience turned an awesome night into a very unpleasant, headache-inducing evening. Would have scored a 4, but smoking dropped it to a 3.
A must on St Paddy’s Day. Early evening and there were plenty of people around, including lots of families watching the highland dancers and the Pipe and Drum band. Very festive atmosphere. And plenty of Guinness on tap!
I definitely wasn’t expecting a place like this in Albury. Great pub with fantastic ambience and friendly service. The menu selection was good and offered plenty of options. The food was fresh and delicious, highly recommend for a nice casual meal.
