2 for 1 main meals on a Sunday is great value. Good size pub, with plenty of tables and a varied menu. Bar and kitchen staff, and kitchen staff are friendly.

Besides waiting nearly 50 minutes (Saturday 7pm), the steak and chicken shnitz was cooked well. Chips a little under cooked but couldn’t complain. Beers were nice and fresh on tap.

We made the mistake of going for the decor and having the food! I have eaten here before and it seems that the standard has dropped to rock bottom level since then. I ordered the Beef Curry, which tasted like it may have come out of a jar – and a very poor one at that. The curry was bland and sludgy. I asked for it to be spicy, so they just sprinkled extra chilli flakes on the top. The accompanying pappadum (one only!) was very oily and not very satisfying. The fact that my meal arrived about 5 minutes after ordering it was my first clue that this was going to be an awful meal. I’m certain that meal saw a microwave before being presented to me. My friend ordered a Ceasar Salad. You’d think they couldn’t get this wrong – but that wasn’t the case. The salad was ordinary and uninspiring and was graced with a stone cold poached egg. This egg was so cold it may well have come straight from the fridge. Definitely not from boiling water. The staff who handle the meals desperately need food handling training. I watched the guy plating up the meals wipe the sides of the plate with the same tea towel he used to wipe down the benches. He also used his bare hands to place food on plates ie: chips, hamburgers, schnitzels. Not good enough and certainly not up to Food Handling standards we have come to expect. The decor of the hotel is lovely, the drinks are reasonably priced and the general ambience is great – just stay away from the food!!!

The great Empire Hotel of Annandale. Came in on the weekend to escape the heat wave. Was pleasantly surprised by the craft beer selection. Ordered the modus Australian ale as well as the three toed pale ale. Amazing aircon and was very happy that it was open during the long weekend. Will be coming back for craft beer week.Hieu Lam

Had a surprisingly unpleasant experience here with the owner who’s behavior was nothing short of disgusting. He shouted at one of our 4 yr old girls and made it very clear he didn’t want children in his establishment! Amazingly unreasonable and ridiculous behaviour. They don’t deserve any customers ever.

Families with young children stay away!. We went here today for a special lunch to celebrate my parents wedding anniversary. We had 5 young children with us aged 2 and 4 years. The children were very excited to go out for a special treat for lunch and were sitting together at the table chatting happily together and laughing. They were been well behaved. One of the young children stood up on the chair and the owner had the audacity yell directly at the very young child who burst into tears! We were the only customers in the dining area and he proceeded to tell us that the children were far too noisy and he could hear them from the other side of the room! Needless to say we cancelled our orders and left the pub immediately. I have never witnessed such terrible customer service. If the owner does not want children in the pub he should not have a children’s menu and advertise it as a family bistro. We will not be returning or recommending this to anybody with small children.

It’s such a shame about the food at this place becasue the hotel itself is fabulous. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. This is my local so I have given it a few goes but the meals we ordered were overcooked, dry and tasteless. They have a 2 for 1 on Sundays but I would prefer to pay full price and receive a meal that was edible.
