Having lived in Greece, we know good Greek cuisine when we find it and WE FOUND IT AT THE GREEK DOOR! This is an absolute gem of a place. Located in a typical Balmain sandstone building on Darling Street, the ambience is cosy and not noisy like some Greek reastaurants; the maitre’d was great fun, very warm and made us feel so welcome. The decor is pleasant with exposed brick, white leather chairs, tables not too close to each other, a wonderful bar with ambient lighting and stools to accommodate the overflow or for an aperitif before dinner. The menu is small-ish but WOW is the food good! Based on a share or Meze concept we had the Spanakopita and smoked Eggplant – all with pitta which were outstanding. Then we shared the Prawn Saganaki, fish of the day, pork and slow cooked lamb with a side of Horta (Greek dandelion leaves like Spinach) – all absolutely mouth-wateringly scrumptious. We did a bit of wine tasting and tried the Greek white, red & rose wines by the glass; all from the Peloponnes area – again all absolutely divine. We finished with a shared Baklava and coffee and the bill didn’t break the bank. And the chef came to see if we had enjoyed our dinner and thanked us for coming. All very civilised and we can’t wait to go back. This is without doubt one of the best Greek restaurants we have found in Australia and we lived in Melbourne for 9 years, but The Greek Door is ‘out of this world’ superb!
