Understated oddity below an old man’s boozer in a side street. But as your dear mother said, don’t judge a book by its cover. The space is the remnants of a beer garden, partly covered with glass, some just a pergola overhead. It’s leafy and green in a maiden hair fern kind of way.Waitstaff are the real deal – very experienced Italian blokes. Safe hands, very familiar with the menu, cooking methods and the VERY extensive Italian wine list. Authentic. We start with heirloom tomato salad with buffalo mozzarella curd. Utterly exquisite. Then the rigatoni with salsicce. Delicious. Then we share mains of fillet steak with verdant pure, whilst the barramundi was plump, crisp yet delicately moist. Almost perfect. We pause with some cheddar and caramelised pear quarter to wile away the remnants of the 2009 Barolo, then a prune with Armagnac. This was the only weirdity. We share some tiramisu and vin santo. Both outstanding. Then some arancello. Pungent explosion of oranges. Delightful.Service is slick, atmosphere convivial. It works.Highly recommended.
An absolute favourite! Stylish Italian dining in a back alley of balmain. Only the freshest and most authentic ingredients are on display at this place with a wine list to match. The interior almost makes you feel like you are in an open air garden which provides a quaint dining experience. Go for the ‘no fussy pants’ option and let the chef decide on your meals for the night! Prices are what you would expect at $10-20 for smaller shares and $20-30 for larger options. You really can’t go wrong with this menu and the staff can recommend wines to match. My favourite dish is the bass groper pippies and cabbage – make sure you also get sides to share such as their polenta and Parmesan. My only regret is that both times I’ve eaten here I’ve been too full for dessert! Put this place on your list!
Not a bad place if you are after something not too much in your face. Staff are good but food has been touch and go for me and my wife for some time. DO return here becuase the feel of the place is quite good. Food is of good quality.
Neighbourhood gem. Simple and delicious Italian food that has me returning for more with the slightest opportunity. Polenta chips are crisp light and fluffy, great pastas and the spatchcock is delicious
Very pleased with this find. First visit & had the Chef selection – great value. Diners around us also enjoying themselves with a lot of shared ‘food envy’ & menu enquiries across tables. We will be back.
First time at One Ford Street and I have heard good things. I was really looking forward to a really good Italian venue that let the flavours speak for themselves. The crab was phenomenal. As was the tomato salad and ravioli.
Great dining experience in an old Balmain institution wine and food exceptional lots of little twists on traditional Italian staff attentive great experience thoroughly recommend it
