  • Service a bit scratchy..main course shoved onto the table before entree even finished..apart from that menu offers a very good cross section of tastes…

  • The staff are so very rude - they literally don't want to be there (as I was told by our 'bartender' during a function!) Would never go there again.…

Husband had been here for steak mid last year. Didn’t know where to go for dinner so he suggested a visit Back to Royal Oak Hotel. We sat in the back dining room. For entree we ordered the mushroom truffle brushetta which had the blackest most overcooked mushrooms ever, garlic bread which was more like dessert. Way too sweet. Confit garlic in broche… just too sweet all round. The chicken wings we ordered were good. Mains was where it came crashing. The sweet potato soup special didn’t have the ‘Indian spice’ it was overwhelmed with written on the menu or seriously I wouldn’t have ordered it. Tasted like a jar of Indian simmer sauce was just chucked in a bland soup. Hubbie liked his pie but mash got sent back cause it was cold. One huge thing lacking in all the average food was seasoning. We had to salt absolutely everything. We don’t love overly salty but noticed everyone around us doing the same. No seasoning at all on anything! Kitchen should be tasting the food before it goes out.The menu sounds great and I just Wanted to love this place, cause the ambience was nice, the room stunning and could see myself booking an event here. But with food like what I experienced, no thanks.

pleasant and friendly service. osso buco meat was tasty, however, the rissoto was a fail. seemed more like congee. The New York was aveage. For a 120 grain fed it seemed far more like a grass fed cut! tasted like well done even though it looked medium. medium rear was ordered. The Mead was excellent. STCY

The royal oak hotel is not far off the Main Street of Balmain and it is a find! The food is upmarket for a pub – the panko crumbed schnitzel was delicious. Choosing from the menu can be difficult as there is a number of share options, steaks, pastas and seafood. This pub is also a great spot to watch sporting events and is popular with the locals. The staff are friendly and with a different meal special each night it is worth a visit to the royal oak.

Very pleasant Sunday night at the Royal Oak. Cosy atmosphere with the fireplace doing its thing and friendly staff. Not too busy either. Sunday roast and ribs were the birthday order of the day and both were very generous in serve and enjoyable in taste. Plenty of meat on the ribs and lamb on roast plate. Civilised Sunday night and full tummy to start the week!

Congenial local with homely, welcoming feel. Staff remind me of the sisters I never had.Caramelised garlic bread was scrumptious, albeit not conventional. Vampires present no threat tonight, laden with mooshy, sweetness.Wagyu sausages, peas, mash & chutney particularly tasty, albeit the snags looked more like kransky. Heirloom tomatoes with shredded buffalo mozzarella a bit tasteless. The pork ribs were ethereal. I know what I’m getting next time!Really need pepper grinders, not daggy pepper shakers.Delatite Pinot Gris went down like it should.

this is our go to when we don’t feel like cooking, great food for the price, in fact the food has got better exponentially compared to just a couple of years ago, we like the variety and the fact that it seems to be a local secret.
