RUN, RUN FAST FAR FAR AWAY…………………………………………………………………………………………..FOOD POISONING…………………
Called in for Saturday lunch and a few bets on the horses. The pub is really nice witb big open plan and extremely friendly staff. The food however is like the old meals you would get in the RSL clubs back in the 80s.I was recommended the wagyu flank steak by the staff and what a disappointment. It came out with an inedible baby leek that a billy goat would have found hard to digest,i really am flummoxed as to why it was even on there. If it was purely for decoration or just to add size to the plate i will never know.Once i removed the weather worn leek,i was left with a cold chewy piece of poorly cooked meat on a spoonful of cold mash and a side of crispy chips.@The steak was a bloody disgrace at $32,it really was nothing more than the average $10 steak available in most pubs and clubs. The corned beef was nice but really was nothimg more than a winter meal in a nursing home and at $26 is very poor value. The burgers are less than average in taste and size and for $18 i could have got 3 nice ones across the road at the kebab shop.I was told the chef is supposed to be well known and had good reviews at a pub in Paddington he once cooked at but the quality, prices and portion size will be his demise at this beautiful Banksia Hotel.Ill be back for a day on the punt but will be eating kebabs across the road instead.
I give them 3.5, not because food is great. But the overall experience was ok with kids. They have a good kids party area. Place looks decent. Food was ok. Steak was nice, salad with king fish was nice. The other food was soso. The sausage roll would be nicer if it lost its mass amount of cumin seeds in top. Serving sizes are big. And for a local bistro, its not bad. So if u r expecting 4 fourteen, u will probably be disappointed. But expect a local bistro with decent food and setting, and u will be ok.
Went for dinner last night on the way home from work. Our first time here. Ordered our meals at the counter. Then had to go to the bar to order our drinks. Ordered the pork belly sausage roll which arrived at our table promptly. My husband was still at the bar ordering drinks. Found the pork belly sausage roll to be dry and not presented like for like as is on the website. Mains we ordered the wagyu flank steak which came with a side of chips we added a side of vegetables which was broccolini. The flank steak was charred on the outside and the meat was almost roar. Flank steak being the cut from the bottom abdominal area needs to be treated with care. It was very tough, tasteless and hard to digest. Chips ok had better and the broccolini could have been served much warmer. Overall I have better better pub food with no pretentious build up. When you decide to commit to being passionate and excited about bistro food this must be present and tasted in the food you serve. This was lacking in all categories and was very disappointing. There is better pub food in the area. First and last time.
We popped into the brand new Banksia Hotel over the weekend after receiving a letter in the mail announcing the new Bistro was opening. The new team have done an amazing job with the updated decor and is completely unrecognisable from the old restaurant. The menu has been put together by Colin Fassnidge of 4Fourteen, Four In Hand and MKR fame and we were definitely not disappointed! We ordered the Suckling pig sausage roll to get us going as we were told by the staff this is one of The chefs signature dishes and it was delicious! I then ordered the flank steak which was honestly the best steak I have had in a very long time, while my wife ordered the Buttermilk Schnitzel which was HUGE and equally tasty. Our friends ordered the roast pork and it looked equally as good. There are some great beers on tap and I we were told there would be a rotation of local craft brews from Batch Brewery and the like.Prices are very reasonable and they have a kids area in the corner that kept our little guy amused. All in all very excited to have this open in our neighbourhood and I have a feeling we will be spending a lot of time at the all new Banksia!
Having gone to 4fourteen two weeks ago, was excited to read Colin Fassnidge taking over a bistro closer to home. Obviously, being a pub expected a more relaxed cuisine and atmosphere. The bistro is gorgeous with timber and exposed brick. Also, a kid’s area with turf and a chalkboard. A relaxed feel thst is great for families. Went with my boyfriend for Sunday lunch – very busy due to this but still lovely atmosphere. Some good features include local craft beers, cocktails, changing specials and wonderful service staff (massive shoutout to the lady with dreads for excellent bistro management and friendly service). We order the pork ear schnitzel, sausage roll and crab toast for small plates. Sadly, the sausage roll had run out. The pork ear schnitzel was well cooked and crunchy but lacked seasoning. The crab toast was underwhelming as it tasted a little like canned crab. We shared the fish and chips (made with market fish) as a big plate. The fish was flakey and well cooked, nice crunchy batter. The fish was the highlight. However the chips accompanying were not crunchy and were poorly seasoned.Overall, the food was a let down in a lovely renovated venue. Hopefully, this is just growing pains and will elevate in quality.Side note: there is a Sunday roast special, someone at a table nearby ordered it and it looked wonderful – definitely not the standard Sunday carvery.
