A good neighbourhood Italian serving quality food in an informal atmosphere is a must in life. La Disfida in Haberfield, Via Alta in Willoughby, there’s plenty of places around to fill the gnocchi-shaped hole in your heart. They can be a bit harder to find on the southern side, but here it’s Spago in Beverly Hills to the rescue. It’s small, intimate, and busy, but the friendly wait staff found a place for us and soon we were snacking on what has to be the most tender salt and pepper calamari (15) going around, accompanied by a little bowl of black squid ink aioli. Angus beef carpaccio with horseradish cream, capers, crispy parmesan, and truffle oil (17) was also quick to arrive but perhaps not at the same level. Mains took a little longer but were worth the wait, with king prawn linguine (29), a side salad of steamed veg (10) and the porterhouse steak special all hitting the spot. It’s the little touches for which I like Spago, whether it’s complimentary grated parmigiano or the tiramisu that comes deconstructed on a plate, instead of the usual square of layered sponge that leaves you comparing it to your mamma’s. Fantastico.

Good food, but fairly poor service. Seated but not seen for 10+ mins. Our water depleted and never refilled. Little details that just work to detract from a pleasant dining experience. Might have been forgivable for exceptionally good food, but it was just good, but not great.
