Pleasantly surprised, could not fault atmosphere, service most of all food beautifully and carefully prepared as if in France. Typically you get what you pay for, a unique dining and enjoyable experience.
My favourite French restaurant. A bit of a drive from Canberra but worth it. Amazing French food created by master chef Christophe, in a cosy cottage atmosphere, particularly if you can get a table near the faux fireplace (pity the real fireplace had to go). Good range of French wines at reasonable prices. Real French speaking waiters, providing a good opportunity to practice your French. Treat yourself and make the trip. Go for lunch and take in the other joys of Bungendore as well, or go for dinner and stay overnight at The Carrington. Or you can try one of Christophe’s cooking classes. Highly recommend. :-))
Mothers day diaster!. Arrived early but it was 45 mins before order taken.Great quiche starter came after an hour. Then atruly awful fish main swimming on wet, unseasoned cabbage billed as ‘choucroute’ but as far from choucroute as it could be.A vegetarian main came on same wet cabbage, so dull and uninspired as to be inedible. No s & p on table. After 3 (!!) hours we left, disappointed, never to returnMy daughter, as hostess for our group, wept in shame and disillusion on the way home
Fantastic service, extremely pleasant staff, and a great personal touch added to our dining experience by the chef and his lovely wife. Thanks again, Sophia, Carolina and Michael
Not the Best Choice. We went with high expectations; this is supposed to be the top restaurant in the sleepy little township of Bungendore just outside Canberra (although that’s not saying a lot) & the chef’s website sings (his own) praises. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to it’s own or anyone else’s praises. 6 of us went & our entrees were all generally OK but not particularly noteworthy – the mains were (with 1 exception) panned by all of us for various reasons – dry rabbit, very average beef burgundy (I cook a better one at home) etc. Service was very average – as an example we eventually had to ask the single waiter to remove the pile-up of some 18 glasses on our table to make way for more. The locals we spoke to about the restaurant were either quite surprised about our experience while others nodded their heads sagely & commiserated with us. The restaurant is NOT BYO which I see as a major drawback given the remote location & not terrific value (given the average food) at $230/couple incl. wine & tip (but no dessert & we only had 4 bottles of wine amongst the 6 of us). We had a stunningly better lunch the next day at Shaw Vineyards in-house restaurant (Flint) in Murrumbateman for almost half the (per head) price.
