After a beautiful afternoon kayaking with Go Sea Kayak Byron Bay, I was looking forward to dinner at this restaurant. My darling booked in advance. Apparently this is recommended by the Lonely Planet. We arrived and were seated facing the rainforest. I was taken in by the rainforest view. A kookaburra swooped in and perched itself at the top of the restaurant. The manager told us that she had to feed the kookaburra. Otherwise the kookaburra would terrorise all the diners when they have their dinners. We both ordered the Farmers Market Dinner menu. The main was iron steak and the dessert was panna cotta. I was shocked when the main was served. I only had two measly slices of steak in my plate and it was so chewy despite being cooked medium rare. The panna cotta was very gluggy. What a disappointing experience!
Was here for a work conference. Breakfast choice was ok. I only enjoyed the ranges of fresh fruit, muesli and yogurt. Nice tahini balls. Each lunch they served was average. The dinner I had in the first night (which was not a part of the conference) was delicious. I have the eye fillet and it was cooked to perfection, as were the sides. It’s priced as you would expect from a resort and the outlook from the deck is nice.
Resort style restaurants don’t excite me. But this is a bit different. Cocktails before dinner were exceptional. Pina colada variation with elderflower was outstanding, as was the mai tai. Then dinner of grass fed sirloin and berkshire pork cutlet, accompanied by Paris mash. Yum. Sirloin with ridiculously good bordelaise sauce and lovely leaf salad. Hand cut chips oven roasted not so good – dry and unexciting.Creme brûlée with compote of rhubarb and strawberry melange was delightful. But the crescendo hit with the Paul Bassett macchiato. So good. One of the best coffees I’ve ever had.Ably washed down by the Freycinet Pinot noir 2013. Tres Bon.Following night, bar food alongside the pool. Lovely grazing plate of charcuterie, delicious feta and chutney and other treats. Then some bruschetta with buffalo mozzarella and the sweetest cherry tomatoes, then some pizza with chorizo. Pizza base very good. Tertini 2013 Pinot Noir a delight – I can see how it won the London Wine Show best Pinot in the world. Now we’re talking.
