Stopped to try their yum cha – who could resist. The coconut sticky rice I could have eaten all day, the steamed pork buns were delicious and the steamed custard bun packed full of steaming yellow custard. My kids loved their treats and the free green tea in a gorgeous pot. Highly recommend.

Red Ginger – Bangalow, NSW. Though mostly a supermarket and supply store for Chinese groceries and cookery, Red Ginger also provides a try for a variety of dim sums and tea on the run. The store is very pretty and there is a lot to see and admire in there. Away from Chinatown, this is some of the tastiest and best quality dim sum that can be found. On display and ready-made, there are a couple of dozen choices to be made. They range from a selection of vegan dumplings (something which can be guaranteed to be rare to non-existent in Chinatown; Byroners would go ape for these options) to non-dim sum options like fish cake. These usually can be bought for a bit of pocket money and are good value. While waiting for my big sister to finish her massage, I spent time with my elder sister and her husband minding the baby and wandering the main street of Bangalow. First, it was to go here and suss it out. Between the four of us – yes, baby gets to try all sorts of foods during meals out where she is part of it – we got a taro & waterchestnut dumpling, sui mai, gyoza and steamed vegetable bun.All were very good, with fresh ingredients and no artifical pro-longers to taste in them. I have beforehand divided up dumplings and such in half, which was a little tricky; to divide it into kind-of quarters is indeed a challenge. Everyone got to try everything though, so that is all good. The main stayer though was the vegetable bun, which was like a steamed pork bun; it was soft and moreish with a good vegetable mixture in it. Wanton skin is always such a tasty aspect, it is hard to describe why but that could be from the aroma and flavours of the pork being infused into it. This is worth going to, it is a break from the Westernised idea of what Chinese cuisine is and that is fantastic. Subtle and healthy, this is good for a brief snack in between times with a whole slew of non-samey options to keep you coming back.
