Going to start my review by saying that my experience may not be the best reflection of this restaurant. We booked for a Thursday night online. No where did it say on their website that Thursdays are training nights with a set menu. When they called to confirm booking the day before, no mention was made of it too. (Later we saw at their bakery that this was the case but really should be made obvious on website so that out of towners like me are informed). I liked the entrée. Greens with slow cooked egg. It was light and refreshing. A good start. The main was duck, beetroot and quinoa. It was a little uninspiring. Duck and quinoa were quite plain. Slight sweet sauce on side which helped but still didn’t love the dish. I must say I generally don’t love duck so really wasn’t into the dish. Would have really liked to have 2 options to choose from. Dessert was apples and ice-cream. I didn’t mind it but my partner would not normally choose a fruit dessert. Once again, would have liked to have been told it was set menu or given the option to choose between 2 desserts.
Our understated country waitress is effortlessly beautiful. She gestures casually out one window to show where the 2014 Logan Sauvignon Blanc ($12/glass) comes from, then the other to indicate the origins of the Pressed Duck ($36) with lentils and heirloom carrots. If we hadn’t guessed from picturesque grapevines, her nonchalant answer certainly reminded us we weren’t in Sydney anymore
Another gorgeous lunch while in Orange !! We did the chef surprise 7-course meal. Each course was more beautiful than the last. Special mention to the trout and the pork. Both just melted in the mouth and you wanted more. The portions were good size, considering we were doing seven courses. The desserts were a surprise, not being sickly sweet. Lovely citrus cake and salty cheese to finish up an amazing meal. The service was good. Friendly enough to accommodate our dog. And it doesn’t hurt that the views around are breathtaking.
I went to Racine for the second time (25yr old rep visiting Orange). Amuse bouche of sheep’s cheese, trout and fennel was so punchy and flavoursome. Entree was presented with absolute finesse – could have just looked at it and been happy. Cured egg yolk was incredibly experimental and had a great texture I’ve never tried before! Fresh, light and Heston-esque. Highly recommend it.—–06 Mar, 2014—–I LOVED RACINE. The quail, sultana mousse, chicken liver parfait and hazelnuts was absolutely delicious. A perfect match of sweet and meat. Main course of trout and fennel was a little over cooked but fresh flavours. The rhubarb dessert with peach sorbet was fantastic. BEST RESTAURANT IN ORANGE, hands down. Amazing service and beautiful homely setting on a vineyard. Well deserved chefs hat.
