I still remember the first time I ever had a banh mi sandwich. My aunt picked up my brother and I from Chinese school on Saturday (who else went to Chinese school?!) and then we went for lunch. She introduced us to banh mi sandwiches and I was sold because I loved how there were pickled vegetables! I don’t eat them often though and sometimes I find the baguette to be on the harder and scratchier side but they are cheap as far as sandwiches go. In Australia, they usually call them “pork rolls” instead of banh mi probably so that they will appeal to more people. Destination Roll has a location close to my office near Wynyard station and they always have a line up during lunch hours.
Seeing a line at destination roll really enticed me to try a $4.50 pork roll. I was hungry and when you’re hungry, any meal should taste great. Destination roll left me disappointed. There was a long line as well! What i found ludicrous was people were waiting in a long line to pay $1 for a bread roll. Apparently it’s the best tasting roll.I ordered the crispy pork roll which was different, but did not taste that great. The bread roll was a step up compared to other stores, in terms of crispy-ness, otherwise the same. I would rather purchase 5 rolls for $1 from other stores than just one for a little bit of extra crisp.
In the Vietnamese town like Cabramatta, such Bánh Mì quality is considered mediocre. When destination roll first opened, I spotted long queue here. Probably it was cheap so people keep coming back? Ordered a chicken roll which was soft rather crunchy. When the lady put Spanish onion and heaps of lettuce in the roll, I thought to myself oh please it’s Bánh Mì not a subway. It tasted rather bland. Only a little amount of chicken was added. Not coming back here because I can find this kind of Vietnamese rolls in city and other non-Vietnamese areas.
Probably the best Vietnamese pork rolls in Sydney. Great price and friendly staff. Only thing lacking is the size of the store and the queue out the front as it’s so popular
Had it yesterday. Delicious! A lady advised me to try their BBQ pork roll. Luckily they don’t have fish sauce! A bit spicy for me but I ll come back
