The Alfred is a classic pub with a cool little outdoor courtyard. The draw card here is their chef and kitchen – which pumps out some great meals. The Alfred and their chef Jamie have taken classic pub food, reworked it and created some sensational dishes while still managing to sell it at classic pub prices. We were here for a tasting of their menu and were treated to a range of dishes. I loved the crumbed chicken thigh and blue cheese sauce, as well as the herb and parmesan gnocchi. The standout for me though was the Alfreds surf and turf, which was created with smoky BBQ brisket and coconut crumbed prawns. The meat was melt in your mouth tender and the pure and steamed kale were great additions to the dish. If you are around on a Sunday, then the Roast is definitely the option to go for – there is a reason it is classic and with a Yorkshire pudding – it’s a hit from their menu! Drop on down for fresh and fantastic food.
I visited roughly between 12.45-1.30pm, Wednesday the 14th of December, 2016.Can’t complain with their $14 steak lunch special. The interior of the bistro was spacious and air conditioned. Fairly quite crowd inside as well.So it felt like a fairly relaxed pub (which i do like, for lunch time).Full kudos to the bargirl who served me as well (in the front ground level bar), and kindly took my finished plate away. She was awesome. And really cute 🙂

Poor Food, Service, and Ambience; Okay Grog. Formerly known as the Grose Farm Hotel a lifetime ago, this place is indeed gross. The place has a strikingly dirty appearance and feel to it, with carpets fully soaked with foul smells.Food seems reasonable enough for Camperdown / Newtown; but, when the food arrives, the quality is appalling. The size of sides, such as a bowl of fries, are underwhelming and overpriced but, thankfully, that of mains is reasonable enough. A critique common to all dishes ordered is that they were too salty.Though bar staff were generally friendly, service was generally poor, with staff confused as to what we had ordered, and the fact that we had to pick up our dishes by the kitchen, though other patrons were catered for for whatever reason. The only remotely redeeming feature of the Alfred Hotel was relatively cheap drinks. We suppose that, for some, the place, being opposite two residential colleges of the University of Sydney and so close to the University at large and a major hospital, is a place to unwind for students and hospital staff. Indeed, if it weren’t for these, the Alfred Hotel would perhaps not be sustainable on simply its regulars. On balance, we would not recommend dining at the Alfred Hotel, particularly if you can walk to Newtown.
Great food and service. We went there for dinner. The service was fantastic and there was a lot on the menu to choose from. The meals were delicious, cheap in price and very generous. I would definitely recommend this to people who want a lovely meal.
Value for money. $10 rump steak with a lovely charred barbecue flavour… delicious chips and a nice mushroom sauce, served with salad. Can’t go wrong! Nice heated outdoor area. The staff were friendly and served us quickly.
Poor customer service. The alfred hotel i find to be quick exclusive. under the new ownership i am very disappoint. first of all there is no friendly customer service, the food over valued for what it is and i find them to be quite bias on there patrons who the admit. i do not have great confidence that the new owners would last if they want to keep up to date with the growing market.
