I went here last night for dinner with a few workmates. My friend had pre-booked the table for 7. The service was friendly and we ordered quite a mixture of dishes including Laos sausages (delicious), red curry, Tom yum soup, crispy rice salad (was devoured) soft shell crab with paw paw salad and a few sticky sticky rices. Overall, the food was tasty and the servings were quite generous for a larger group. The only downside is that when we were directed to the toilet, a few of my friends also agree that the hand soap smelt funky and the toilet itself smelt like sewage. Usually in small Asian restaurants around canley/cabra, you would expect nothing more than a small, decent toilet but this was at such a poor standard that my workmates and I were keen to get to the next destination just to use their restroom. The staff were approachable and notified of this matter so hopefully it will be addressed !

We ordered the noodle dish. The noodles tasted really unpleasant. They kind of tasted like mi goreng. The broth also didn’t taste nice. There are many more restaurants close by that serve better broth and noodles.

My favourite Laos places are the ones near Fairfield Station (which I will review closer to summer so that I can better enjoy their salads!), but this time, I decided to give Spicy Aroma in Canley Heights a go.Their best dish? The BBQ ox tongue. If you’ve never had it before, it might sound a bit strange but it really is delicious if done well. When done well like at Spicy Aroma, it is soft and tender with no weird smell that reminds you that it is tongue. The Spicy Aroma dish was also huge!Their worst dish? The Laos sausage. Laos sausage is typically fatty and soft, flavoursome with chilli and lemongrass, with rice mixed through the pork. Unfortunately at Spicy Aroma, the texture wasn’t great and it tasted as though either there was too much rice or the sausage hadn’t been packed tightly enough as it was falling apart. For the full review, please visit imhangry.net/2017/07/07/spicy-aroma-canley-heights/

Upon my recent disappointment in the longest running Lao restaurant in Fairfield, we decided to try this place as it has been opened for a few years now. I use to drive pass this place on a regular basis, but have always dismissed going to it because there was only one place that I would go to for Laos. The staff here are as friendly as it gets in any of the restaurants in Canley Heights, I was actually shocked to find that ox tongue was $19 when looking at the menu. Its like they think theyre the only ones who sell ox tongue in the area. Or maybe their ox tongue is so good they could justify the 19 dollar charge. Either way we didnt get it, it was too much of a gamble for a first time in a restaurant that none of the locals rave about. The first test to any Lao restaurant has to be the papaya salad, Lao style of course! Also got duck eggs, shrimp fried rice and tiger tears (marinated bbq pork). Not that Im complaining, but they charge $2 for a pot of tea. This must be the only restaurant on Canley Vale Road that charges for standard jasmine tea. After ordering I needed to pee, so I asked if they had a toilet, I got a short tour of the kitchen as I had to walk through it to get to the back outside the restaurant to where the toilet was. I was glad to see that the kitchen looked pretty decent, it wasnt smelly or super old looking. I also got to see my duck eggs being freshly cooked in boiling water on one of the woks as I walked passed. The papaya salad came out first, it looked great, but the papaya was shredded way too thickly. It didnt soak all the juices and burst with sweet, salty and sour flavours when chewing it in your mouth like a normal papaya salad should. The fried rice came next, it was a generous serving and tasted ok. Not great, just ok, quite ordinarily just ok. The duck eggs came out after the rice, which was a bit annoying, as duck eggs should come out first so you can eat it and get rid of the shells before the main stuff comes out. And then finally the tiger tears which was rather disappointing. Tiger tears are suppose to have a layer of fat that is seared to give it a nice crisp and almost crunch like texture. This one did not have any fat as well as being over cooked, it was very chewy and the fish sauce that comes with it wasnt very good either. Lucky we didnt order the ox tongue and saved ourselves the heartache of a $19 let down. So now we know why none of the locals rave about this place! And now the search for a good Lao restaurant will continue!

GOOD / CHEAP / BIG PORTION are the things all locals love!Spicy Aroma has been here over 10 years and it serves up great food, I felt a little bad going to Holy basil because I usually go here but now I stop going to holy basil because its more expensive and portion got smaller! This place over holy basil any day! Great little restaurant in Canley Heights. Food is tasty and at reasonable prices. There’s a mix of Thai and Lao food on offer, but i personally prefer ordering the Lao options such as the Lao sausages, salads, bbq meats etc. combined with some sticky rice and it makes for a very satisfying meal. Servings are generous and spice level easily adjustable, upon request. I have also tried the usual Thai noodle dishes such as pad Thai and pad see ew and they are equally as tasty. They also have some lunch specials, though i have only been for dinner. It is located slightly away from the main group of Vietnamese restaurants so can easily be missed, but it is within walking distance, so definitely not a hassle to get to. Worth a try.
