Upon entering Hai Au Lang Nuong, you first think, wow…this place is messy, but soon you realise this is Vietnam. Not in terms of the messy decor, but the volume of decor that all seems to complement each other mutualistically. You enter smelling the fresh aromas of meat being bbq whilst being hidden behind the masquerade of the decor. We ordered a variety of dishes today and they were great! The only thing I disliked were the tamarind cockles, but thats true to my own personal preferences. Overall, a great dining experience. The only downfall of this restaurant is the overwhelming number of menus and choices.
Good food but poor service.Unfortunately, we expect most Asian restaurants to have below average service, but the service here is exceptionally lacking. We ordered four dishes: grilled chicken, stir-fried scallops, stir-fried vegetables, and plain rice, which all came at different times. The rice came first, barely five minutes after placing our order, sitting there getting cold (although covered with a lid) before the scallops arrived on its lonesome. Another 25 minutes after the scallops, the grilled chicken finally came, and after two complaints about the vegetables, they eventually arrived when we had finished the chicken, so we were eating cold rice with stir-fried morning glory. Totally unacceptable. They were very busy, but that is no excuse for the kitchen’s poor timing. How hard can it be to serve a main dish and serving of rice together? The food was good (hence the two stars) and the atmosphere seems very authentic to Vietnam, but with service like that, it’s impossible to recommend as a dining destination. forkingaroundsydney.blogspot.com

This far away place that I found on this app, insanely drove for an hour just to try some truly authentic Vietnamese food. I wasnt disappointed. Was it worth the distance? My stomach thought so…The restaurant is cramped and looks as though it is hasty decorated. Despite the interior of the restaurant… they served some damn good food! We ordered the spicy noodle soup and their fried quail and that dipping sauce of theirs. That was something remarkable and memorable. If only it wasnt on the other side of the world, I may forgive the bad interior and frequent my patronage. So they do say… you really have to travel for the good stuff.
I never would have thought to eat at this place because it looks a bit daunting and the food looks unfamiliar. It was selected to be featured in a marketing push to promote postcode 2166 as a dining destination, and I was the face of the campaign so I had the opportunity to savour some of its signature dishes including the stewed fish in claypot and the sweet and sour catfish. The beef salad is pretty amazing too. My meal was topped off with Vietnamese-style creme brulee, which is served with ice cubes. The creme brulee is a holdover of the French colonial days, I’m told. I thoroughly enjoyed the food at this place and am very motivated to go again.
