From the outside, Circa 1876 looked like an old, rundown cottage house that a crazy haired granny and her 100 cats called home, but once you step inside, it’s like you’ve arrived at a country house somewhere in France that’s owned and decorated by an antique dealer. We were staying at The Convent and Circa 1876 was only a short stroll down the tree-lined driveway. I had read many good things about this restaurant when I was researching for our Hunter Valley trip, so I was really looking forward to our lunch at this one Chef Hat restaurant.

Roberts was hands down one of my favourite Restaurants. Revisiting this as Circa 1876 the food and service was excellent, a little slower paced and accompanying sauces slightly on the sweet side for me, overall well executed. Recommend ordering the pumpkin here – smoky and delicious. Difficult competition in the Hunter.

With a number of options for dining, I left the choice up to my friend. She picked Circa 1876 because she had seen it on ‘The Bachelor’ and was dying to try this romantic venue herself.  Previously called Robert’s Restaurant, Circa 1876 is part of the Peppers Convent in Hunter Valley. One of its main features is the kitchen garden found next to the restaurant, where much of the produce for the menu is sourced. It is also a popular wedding venue.

Circa 1876 is situated in an historic 139-year old cottage on 12-acres of lush garden, just near the entrance of Peppers Convent. This fine dining restaurant runs under the skilled hands of Chef Trent Barrett, who comes with years of Executive Chef experience and a passion for organic produce and farm to fork dining.

Although this restaurant looked very inviting with a fire burning in a huge hearth and beautifully laid tables the menu was disappointing in the extreme. Over half were fish dishes and as someone who cannot eat that food group and, taking into account what sounded appealing (or not) the remaining choices were limited particularly with the starters. There was not even one lovely hot soup on a cold night on offer!!  The main courses were equally disappointing for a restaurant and a chef with supposedly such a reputation. The duck roulade at $44.00 was overpriced for the portion presented on the plate and if a side dish of a vegetable had not been ordered one would have left still feeling very hungry.  The vegetarian choice was not very nice at all – although the dish was presumably supposed to be served warm the pumpkin was cold while the lentils were undercooked and the ‘stack’ of lentils and something indiscernible was awfully stodgy and bland. The wine at $14.00 per glass (100ml serving) was definitely overpriced. In all a VERY over rated restaurant and one to which we would never go to again.
