Run by the peeps at automata next door, the food echoes semi fine dining presentation (read portion size). Service a tad standoffish but they got things done. Definitely aint a canteen. Open omelette 3.25/5, those bonito flakes were gimmicky though they add to the taste somewhat. Egg was cooked well. Egg benny w black rice, cant really score as i avoid hollandaise usually but those pre-prepared black rice (pudding) was quite tasty.
Located on Kensington Street, a fairly recent addition to the food scene. It is the casual eatery of Clayton Wells who runs Automata situated close by. Started with some coffee which is Single O Blend. It tasted fruity and may not be to everyones taste. It was decent enough. The food is definitely much better! We shared a couple of the breakfast items. The Curried Scrambled Eggs, LPs Sausage, English Muffin is a simple and well executed dish. There was a nice spice to the creamy scrambled eggs upon the toasted muffin and the two sausages tasted lovely. Grilled Mortadella + Fried Egg Sandwich, Fermented Chilli, Fried Shallots brings shaved mortadella in a soft bun topped with two sunny side up eggs. The chilli adds a spice kick to the dish. When we were leaving they had some delectable baked goods sitting on the counter. They also have quite a few interesting items on the lunch menu which definitely needs a re-visit to try!
I would like to comment that this restaurant probably would have received a near perfect mark. Keep reading until the end.I came to A1 canteen upon hearing great reviews and the food looked amazing from what weve seen in pictures. Front of house lady was lovely and our waitress was super nice and extremely good at her job. The coffee is Single O and a very easy drink. We ordered the brown rice dish with miso pumpkin, wood ear mushrooms, ginger pickles and a poached egg. The flavours are lovely and I really enjoyed this. We also tried the tomatoes on toast with smoked Fetta, harissa and herbs. Also a great dish, with a bit of a spice kick to it. During our dining experience, we ordered a coffee. We proceeded to order a second and third coffee, and then some food. After this, wed been sitting for about 20 minutes chatting, almost ready to leave. Unfortunately, a third staff member came over, dumped the tray with the bill and rudely said you have to leave, we have bookings. This wouldnt really be an issue if she wasnt so rude about it. Whilst I can understand cafes are busy places, working on their approach in this type of situation would be recommended. I would like to comment that the cafe had empty tables. I waited my turn to be seated and I too am a paying customer who would have naturally left shortly after, but to be pushed out the door is not appreciated. aroundtheclockfoodie.com
Sandwich ninjaA great place for sandwiches, we came here and only tried the sandwiches and didn’t have a chance to try the other stuff but from what we had … We will return and try out the other stuff.Sandwich was tasty and looks good, worth a visit. asianfoodninja.com
Headed to A1 canteen go breakfast as I read its opened by the same chef as Automata and I really liked the food there. A1 canteen doesnt disappoint, the menu is a bit different from the norm and there is variety. I had the grilled mortadella & fried egg sandwich which was delicious. Drinks were a bit small in size though wished my iced coffee was bigger. Service was friendly theengineereats.com
