In a quiet little back street in the small town of Woolgoolga, NSW lies the best cafe in Australia. Living in Victoria, I’ve only had the pleasure of eating at Common Ground twice. Both times I encountered some of the tastiest, most beautiful and most inventive menus I’ve had the fortune of stumbling across. While every other hipster cafe in the country tries to reproduce a ‘rustic’ ambience and an ‘organic’ feel, Ground Earth pulls off by merit of actually being rustic, and actually serving verifiably organic ingredients. The weatherboard exterior and the hard wood tables and the gorgeous ceramic plates are all authentically bespoke additions. They also have attention to ethical matters, with high quality vegan food and vegan substitutions available without any compromise on flavour, as well as waste minimisation policies. If the waitstaff (by which I mean the same woman who’s responsible for doing table service, payment, and table clearance, and does so without any delay to any customer) is to be taken at their word, the smoked salmon that appears in their seasonably available seafood linguine is wild caught at local fisheries, and smoked on-site in the large smoker visible in the kitchen. The preserves in the cake selection and probably the cakes themselves too, all homemade. The absolutely gorgeous blue mermaid latte another great example of Ground Earth’s ability to elevate simple, local ingredients. Ground Earth isn’t charming, it’s accomplished. The food is high quality, the kitchen is just behind a pane of glass through which you can see the kitchen procedure. The competence and consistency in the food is very clear and the food is high quality. If there’s a pasta dish available when you pop in, get it.I can’t gush about Ground Earth enough, if you’re ever in a position to try it, do so.
Excellent, well-priced food and beautifully presented. Good service and an interesting menu. Deserves to be much busier, it’s only one street back from the main street in Woolgoolga. Will definitely be back.
Ground Earth is an appropriate newbie to Woopi, leaving it surprising a place like this hasn’t opened sooner. I feel at home in Sydney, only, without all the long-waiting queues and intensity. Ground Earth focus on guilt-free, healthy whole foods, done incredibly well. Their menu changes, so it’s always a lovely surprise for me when visiting. Think grilled mushrooms and goats cheese, breakfast tacos, and corn & black bean fritters. Plates are loaded and built bright, matching the eclectic seating when taking shade under the umbrellas. The coffee is usually right on the money, and their bake display is packed full of GF and raw goodies. These guys also sell loose/bulk wholefoods and jarred delicacies like your favourite kraut. Ground Earth is a must visit every time you’re in Woopi as nothing else in town honestly comes close.
