If you grew up in Sydney, chances are you’ve driven past Da Franco without a second thought. Not me, I’ve had plenty of thoughts – maybe they’re money launderers, mobsters, dealers! Otherwise how have they managed to stay open all these years in the middle of nowhere! To satiate my curiosity, I convinced my friends to join my adventures by promising a ‘special’ xmas dinner. A booking was made (not necessary, but gave me peace of mind so there was no excuse for stale produce). For some time after we arrived, we were the only diners in the restaurant. Eventually a few other tables were filled and when everyone was busy chatting amongst themselves, it almost made you forget you were in a restaurant by the edge of a motorway. Food definitely exceeded expectations. From the first crunch of the punchy bruschetta, we all relaxed a little bit. The seafood platter (Wednesday special) was fresh and provided a sample of both hot and cold crustaceans. Their menu favoured heavily towards beef and seafood, with the odd lamb dish. This made sharing a little difficult as everything duplicated; such was our issue with the bbq octopus for entree, which was fantastically charred but arrived again, in our platter. Osso buco was cooked perfectly and the meat falling off the bone. The spaghetti vongole appeared bland, but delivered great taste that didn’t overpower the crisp clean clams (not a speckle of sand in sight). Our initial consensus was a solid 4, however this has since dropped to 3, because my companions found what appeared to be the cracked lip of a takeaway container in our osso buco. You know when you remove them from the freezer and the edges snap off when you open it? 3 whole pieces of that plastic was in the dish. I was prepared to ignore the first piece when it surfaced, but the final piece was a solid 5cms long! Service was polite and accommodating and the whole night was enjoyable. Prices were reasonable at $40pp but definitely not cheap. Plating was also a little amateur, but the flavours certainly make up for it. Oh and the chips are baked not fried!
Sydney’s best kept secret. I have been driving past this restaurant for years and we finally tried it. This is one of the best Italian restaurants I have been to in Sydney. When you walk through the doors you feel like your eating in a restaurant in Italy. The food is so fresh and authentic. We had a seafood platter for two which rivals some of the best seafood restaurants and for half the price. Value for money and service I’m not sure you will find much better. My biggest regret is I didn’t try this restaurant years ago.
<3 This place. My husband and I used to drive by and insist one day we would stop and eat – the location is so ratty, we would say, the food must be amazing. This year he surprised me with dinner there on Valentines day & we have been die hard fans ever since. It is not just the food, which is so delicious & so reasonably priced (Seafood Platter for 2 is out of this world) but the atmosphere and staff which make this such a gem. Where ever increasingly BYO is difficult or they charge you corkage through the nose, and relaxed dining is discouraged by staff trying to get you seated served and out for another sitting Da Franco is a rare spot where you can BYO and sit until all hours, chatting with the staff, eating, talking & laughing. There is not a nicer place for a party or celebration meal with family & friends.
Take the time to visit this restaurant. Old school Italian! Nothing contemporary about this place. Definitely worth it
Family style, cozy and old school. The price is amazingly reasonable. Because it locates on parramatta rd side, not many people stop and dine in. Sometime you can enjoy the whole dining room and it feel like you are a VIP.
This place is old school. The food is rustic 5 star high quality Italian. Fantastic value for money.
Yummy bruschetta. My boyfriend and i used to drive by this restaurant all the time and wonder how it had stayed open when all the shops around it had closed down.the food here is something that you would expect to find in an italian home. not necessarily with restaurant flair for presentation but enjoyable. particularly the bruschetta which was amazing.a nice quiet place for dinner lit up by the bright lights at the front and the busy traffic passing by the front windows.
