Came on a Sunday for their $12 lunch special. Got the Chicken Schnitzel and Thai Chicken salad to share between 3. The portions were big and the meals were filling, worth the $12. But the Schnitzel was tasteless, seemed like they had forgotten to salt the chicken. On the other hand – the Thai chicken salad was delicious, with a variety of textures of cucumbers, onions, rice noodles, and a kick of heat in the dressing.

It’s modern pub isn’t it? that’s what it is. A place of leisure and a cold one on a Friday night with the lads, or maybe a Sunday afternoon with family and friends over a meal. I don’t know I’m making this up as i go, but what i do know is the foods decent and the beers always cold.

Really poor lunch here today. We were with a large group and had all pre-ordered. My medium rare t-bone was over cooked, grissely and charred. The worst steak I’ve had in a long time. The mash was too dry and the steamed vege tasted like I was at an RSL club. Such a shame it’s a great old pub in such a good location, they just need to get a head chef who knows what he is doing. Every dish I the table (there were about 10 of them) looked average at best.Service tried hard but were let down by the food.

I had the burger. The burger was terrible. Too salty and some how managed to be less than the some of all parts. I was with a large group and no one actually enjoyed their meal.

Give it a couple of months.Having been to The Crowy for dinner on 3 separate occasions since re-opening, I’ve had mixed experiences. It took nearly 45 minutes for my meal to turn up tonight (Thursday) which is pretty poor for fish and chips although the serving size was generous with 6 pieces of fish. Give them another couple of months for the kitchen to find its grove and refine the menu. Hopefully they’ll introduce more drink specials too by then.

3.8 stars. Recently renovated – as in they opened their doors just a couple days ago – their interior has had a major face lift, as has their menu. I was uber impressed with the transformation of the interior (multilevel floors of what seemed like never ending rooms/venues). What can I say, they’ve done a really nice job. As mentioned, their food menu got a total make over (for the most part) also. Can’t say that I can agree with their Surry Hills bistro pricing as some of their meals are just basic pub meals, like for instance their $24.50 prawn pizza or $22.50 panzanella salad…. just a tad expensive when you are in a neighbourhood of great eateries. We ordered the side salad (roughly $8), crispy skin salmon ($26) and sweet potato fries. All of the items were good but not excellent and not something I’d necessarily particularly go back for – simply something I would order if I was in the vicinity already. The celeriac puree that came with the salmon was almost non-existent, a dollop and fridge cold, which didn’t help. The sweet potato fries were delicious and were a decent portion wish they came with a chipotle aioli or a siracha one though. The star of the order was the side salad as it was very inexpensive and had an abundance of ingredients. For once my partner and I werent divvying up the olives and other favourite veggies. Overall I am very happy for the Crows Nest Hotel and look forward to the return of their comedy nights etc. hope that they have a slightly better happy hour and that their food on offerings stay consistent and come down a bit on $.
