A rare find! A great tucked away Italian restaurant with very friendly and professional staff incorporating a history of Italian tastes with a unique atmosphere, especially in the cellar out back if your lucky enough to get a table there.
Absolutely beautiful atmosphere and service was impeccable. Food was amazing! Felt like I was back in Italy whilst eating. Will be coming back here for sure!
Pushy maitre’d, no atmosphere, stale bread, burnt garlic bread, gluggy spag bol, veal that tasted freezer burnt, and dear as hell. We were one of only two tables this particular night. The food wasn’t good. Maybe it’s because we recently returned from Milan, and our expectations were high, but this failed to meet expectations. Figs in prosciutto were sloppy. Buffalo mozzarella was too hard, not luscious and gooey. No veges (other than potato or spinach) – It’s all a bit bleh, which given previous good experiences and reputation came as a surprise. Why keep pouring 500ml sparkling mineral water, when it’s VERY obvious we could’ve/should’ve had several 1L bottles. Gouging, silly, constantly interfering.Tried to make us feel guilty when no dessert ordered, but $22 for sorbet doesn’t work for me.>$400 for 6, no vino, no dessert, left feeling mildly interfered with.Resurrect the venerable Beppi, or time to close the doors. This can’t go on.
I’ve waited a long time to visit Sydney institution, Beppi’s and find myself both agreeing and disagreeing with other Zomatans. The Prawn, Crab & Scallop pasta included fabulously tasty seafood but seemed to lack the saffron cream sauce described on the menu. This was to be an important component of the dish for me, and instead I found a briny, seafood broth. Howeverthe fillet mignon was perfect and the potato delightful. The Zabaglione seemed very sweet and dense in texture with little egg yolk flavour. This dessert was quite alcoholic -which is good -but its Marsala was not the best I’ve tried. Perhaps I had the wrong expectations of this place due to its price point and famous reputation. For some reason the waiter kept demanding my order when I was clearly still considering the menu – I take a detailed interest in food. We were strongly encouraged to order additional courses but not given time to decide what items these might be. I certainly felt discouraged from asking any questions, even if the waiter had still been present at the table. Such was the pressure that when approached by a warmer Sicilian waiter, whose role was to describe the specials, I found myself unable to remember anything he said. He was quite sweet but seemed very sad.I hopeheis okay, following the 24 August earthquakes in Amatrice, Accumoli and Arquata del Tronto. We will be thinking of him and wish him all the best. At least thelarge bread basket of rye, grissini, ciabatta and crisp bread wafer was accompanied by tremendously delicious and generous serves of house prepared hot chilli oil, black olive tapenade and sundrieds. All servings were generous and the additional freebies included perfect dark chocolate squares and shortbread with glace fruit. As I was leaving,we saw a Beppi-esqe staff member who smiled at us.
An italian institution that has been here for 50 years sounds formidable in the Sydney dining scene. Beppi’s is tucked away in a quiet street and the atmosphere is like a family run restaurant. It was quiet when we came on a Friday night and staff were very lovely. We started off with garlic bread and bruschetta. I was not a fan of both as the bread was very tough, cold and the bruschetta was very flat (just a couple of tomatoes with basil). We had zucchini flowers for entree and these were quite fabulous, crispy and light batter on the outside with the light cheese filling on the inside. For mains, we shared the osso bucco and the pumpkin ravioli with burnt butter sage. The pumpkin ravioli was very divine, the pasta was clearly home made and each little parcel exploded with fresh flavours, sweetness from the pumpkin enhanced by burnt butter sage. The osso bucco was falling off the bone and flanked by some polenta. It was a little underseasoned for me but had all the classic hallmarks of italian herbs, tomatoes and wine.I think Beppi’s is a great first date restaurant with its cosy interior and good food. The price tag does exceed your typical italian joint and is a little hefty but it was a nice experience.
I have long heard Beppi is the founding father of Australian Italian cuisine and the restaurant is an institution. So when an opportunity rose to have a family gathering, I didn’t think twice to suggest Beppi’s.Our party of 8 arrived on a busy Friday night and the dinner service was in full swing. We were given a long combined table right in the middle of the dining room which gave us a good view of the whole restaurant. The interior was elegant and classy, in many ways quite unassuming yet appealing. The service was quite slow and unresponsive though. It took us nearly 30 minutes to have our orders taken and to receive our bread rolls. Unlikely my dining companion, I was ready to forgive the slow service as soon as I tasted the food. I had angel hair seafood pasta, it was so creamy and rich, definitely one of the tastiest pasta I had. Despite the service I thoroughly enjoyed the food and ambience. Hope to see improved service next time we visit. thernbdiary.com
This restaurant definitely exceeded my expectations. I came here on a Local Star Food Safari and it was such an amazing experience. Delicious, authentic Italian food plus the staff were beyond friendly, welcoming and topped the overall night. The cosy and decorated interior really added to the authenticity too. ningjaeats.tumblr.com
