Bon Vin is an underground French restaurant which reminds you of a hidden wine cellar. It is an intimate dining spot perfect for two or a small group. With a setting like this, the wait staff are attentive in their service to the whole floor. As the venue only has a dining capacity of less than 40, the menu reflects this exclusivity. We are presented with a well selected menu of 6 entrees, 5 mains and 4 desserts.Tonight we started with Sydney Rock Oysters which had a dash of cream made in distinctive french style. For the main options we selected;- Beef two ways: Pieces of medium rare beef fillet tenderloins with a contrasting pulled beef served with mash potatoes and fries. This dish was paired with France Cahors that resemble a malbec; bright tannins with a smooth and fruity finish.-Lamb three ways: we were able to taste 3 varying flavors of lamb in their 3 differing forms. The first being seared lamb loin medium rare. It had a smoked but not barbecue flavour to it. It was a tad bit chewy but nonetheless paired well with the French Cahors wine. The next is a pulled lamb patty that was juicy and had that distinct lamb flavour that was perfect with the smoked ricotta mash. Last was a kafta springroll. You can see the asian influence in this part of the dish with the fried flour wrapper. The lamb in the springroll had the most flavour out of the 3.Overall it was a exquisite experience and best compliments to the chef for a great french culinary experience. I would definitely come back to try out the rest of the menu.
Bon Vin is a hidden gem, tucked away on Stanley Lane in East Sydney. If you didn’t know it was there you would miss it. I have been a few times now since it opened last year and every time I visit I feel like I have had a little trip to Paris. The food is utterly divine and has never disappointed. Last night for my main I chose the Lamb Pitivier (pictured). The pastry was the flakiest I have ever eaten and oh so buttery. It was a generous size and the lamb melted in your mouth. I would definitely get it again. It was the perfect winter dish. The Hazelnut Bomb dessert (pictured) was another highlight: full of hazelnuts and a too die for caramel sauce. It’s a small and cosy restaurant and the service is warm, friendly and never intrusive. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic dinner (but not only) and the wine list includes local wines not just French wines. #bonvin
