Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant to my fellow diners because of the lack of atmosphere. We booked for 7.30pm on a Saturday night, which should be prime-time for any restaurant, but when we arrived, there were only two other occupied tables with six diners in all. The place reminded me of an empty scout hall, with pale timber floors, unadorned white washed walls and bright lighting, To make things worse, as you can see from the pics, this is a fairly large space, with seating for possibly 80 or more people in two separate sections, so having so few people, coupled with the soulless decor, just added up to a rather dreary and depressing place to dine on a Saturday night. Eventually at about 8.00pm a couple with two young children arrived and sat in the far section near the counter. Their kids were making such a racket that we could pretty much hear it all at the other side of the restaurant. This just highlights another problem with Le Bukhara. If it ever did get busy – and I must confess that having been here a few times intermittently over the years, Ive never seen it full – then you would have a serious noise problem with all that glass and timber and not a sound absorber in sight. Now I guess all this lack of atmosphere is a pity because the food is fresh and tasty, serving sizes are adequate and the prices are reasonable. My wife and I dined, and we ordered vegetable samosas to share, a lamb dansak, legumes, pappadums, pickles, rice and a serve of peshwari naan, which has fruit and nuts. We enjoyed everything. The naan bread was slightly sweet and crunchy and the lamb was beautifully cooked to a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness with a mild sweetness to tease the palate. Service was friendly and polite but in a strange twist, I found it quite slow, with a wait of around 15-20 minutes between entree and main course. I say strange, because with such an empty restaurant one would have thought service would be quicker. And its not made easier by having to sit in a joyless and rather dull atmosphere. I think I detect a hint of Murphys Law here: the emptier the restaurant, the slower the service and visa versa. With our Ent Book discount of 20% (which was actually supposed to be 25%, but I didnt have the heart to quibble about it) we paid a tad under $70 for the two of us and that included a Crown lager and a glass of Penfolds Chardonnay at $11. But overall, as said, prices are not unreasonable.I guess no review would be complete without a description of the toilets. There are separate male and female ones, but theres no signage visible from within the restaurant, so you just need to feel your way around. Clue: Theyre in the middle just at the top of the stairs and to the right of the large mirror. Theyre reasonably clean and well provisioned, except that both urinals in the male one were out of action (see pics). But I guess since there were only about six male guests the whole evening it hardly mattered. To sum up then, Le Bukhara sadly is devoid of atmosphere and suffers from slow service. But on the plus side, you never need to book, the food is very acceptable, prices are reasonable (if using your Ent Book, make sure you get the correct 25% discount up to a max of $30) and parking is a breeze in Double Bay, where restrictions end at 6.00pm. Its also quite spacious and airy. And watch out for the regular Groupon deals. I guess this place might suit if youre at a loose end on a Sat night with no bookings and you arent in a hurry to go anywhere afterwards. You could saunter into anytime and get a table and enjoy a pleasant meal.
Dreadful outing – duck was dry and overcooked with sauce dumped on only parts of it – would never go again Not busy but long delays – some people walked out
I like the vibe of the restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious. Tried a lot of Indian food, and this is one of the best. Staff is very helpful. My family and I had great time there.Highly recommended.
My experience here was amazing. The staff was so warm and the food was amazing. We tried some Mauritian cuisine and it was my first time , It was amazing! The vibe was very low-key and warm. Highly recommended.
Delicious Mauritian / Indian fusion, well executed, impeccable service, and decent value for money. My daughter and I enjoyed the chicken and prawn house specialty and a Mumbai beef (toned down), yummy peshwari naan and mango lassi.
This place is old-fashioned and I had never really thought of a French/Indian restaurant, and had it not been recommended to us, I probably wouldn’t have gone. La Bukhara was recommended to us by a family friend who spoke very highly of it, and indeed the butter chicken did not disappoint! It was absolutely delicious. Creamy, rich, sweet but not sickly. Just divine. One of my favourite butter chickens and was just beautiful to be wiped up with my garlic naan. We ordered scallops to begin with, and they were average, as was the lamb pistachio curry. To be honest though, these are meals that I would not have chosen myself. I would absolutely love to go back and try a saag or rogan josh. La Bukhara has impeccable service and I highly recommend.
Highly recommended for good quality Indian food and service. I came here with a group of 6 people and we all throughly enjoyed and shared our assortment of the range of different dishes we each had. Would defiantly return.
