I rate restaurants based on the following: 1star, I will never go back there even it is free, I will not waste my time with one star places. 2stars, its not great, average food, I would go back there if it was free. 3stars, I would go back there, the food is reasonable considering value for money. 4stars, I sometimes crave the the food and will go back there because of the quality, price and service. 5stars, its my favourite places, my first choices to dine out. By far its the best for your taste buds and pocket!
Went there with friends and family on a Friday night. Ordered a mixed seafood hotpot, waited 20 minutes paid $49 was given a few pieces of fish, mushrooms and some tofu. Rest of my table ordered other dishes, which were also small and sub par quality. Do not recommend
Upon entering we were greeted by a very attentive man- whom I presume is the owner? The service here is very vigilant and prompt. We felt slightly underdressed for this restaurant- the ambience had this low-key, ancient Japanese teahouse vibe to it!The menu is basic, but appetising Japanese food- also Korean. I recommend trying the salmon salad.
Tried this place, after craving Japanese food and looking for a local place with a friend. Stumbled upon this, which was new to us. Greeted by a rather old man (appears to be the manager?), and who gave a lot of attention to us. Place was not too busy for a Sunday night, definitely good place for a normal conversation without having to shout or keep your ears peeled.Ordered the chicken katsu don ($15.5) which was a little on the pricey side for a katsu don. Had the spider roll for $17.5, and fine, this was definitely pushing in price. The taste was average, nothing special. I felt the serving in the sushi was a little smaller than expected however. Food also took quite a while to prepare despite not too many people. Did like that the man at the cashier asked if ‘everything was ok?’, seems to at least show some desire for critical feedback to improve!
As soon as we walked into Torin Japanese Restaurant, we were greeted with ‘annyeonghaseyo’, another Japanese restaurant run by Koreans in Eastwood. The man who greeted us was very friendly and attentive to us during our meal.We ordered a Grilled Sushi Plate, Una Don, Soba and the Creamed Grilled Corn. I was a little sad when the Grilled Sushi Plate came out with only salmon and kingfish, and no scallops (the picture on the menu displayed all three types on the plate). The Una Don was the least favourite, the eel seemed quite overcooked as it was very chewy, a texture similar to calamari when it is overcooked. The soba and creamed corn dishes were pretty good, although it’s not hard to do those well. Overall not a terrible restaurant but I prefer Hukuya down the road for fresh sushi, sashimi and soba.
The reason I remembered this restaurant well was for two reasons – 1) this was the only Japanese restaurant on this side of Rowe street while every single other shop was Korean; 2) the moment I pushed the door open with my partner at the time, all the eyes landed on him as he was the only token white person there. It was amusing the way they stared at him, I had good laughs at his expense! The food was typical standard Japanese food. I had tempura udon which was good – broth was tasty, tempura was crispy, and udon noodles were chewy. My partner had bento box with a bit of everything. Sashimi tasted fresh. We couldn’t really faulty it and it was reasonably price. It wasn’t kind of place you visit for special occasion but it was ok for midweek quite dinner. thernbdiary.com
