Neat pan-Asian restaurant that tries to be different with the food (cheeseburger spring rolls, olive fried rice, etc.) but ends up fairly pedestrian instead.The cheeseburger spring rolls were presented beautifully with alternating squiggles of tomato sauce and mustard, were super crunchy, but also cold in the middle. When we questioned it, the waiter said it was supposed to be like that, which was a lame excuse.The sweet and sour chicken, salt and pepper squid, chicken kaarage bao, and Pad Thai were above average representations that were tasty without being memorable.However, we really enjoyed the novel olive fried rice which was deliciously different with olive tapenade and pieces of roast duck, although it was a touch salty and one chunk of duck was not chewable.And to finish off, the golden fried Gaytime baos were a super way to end the meal, with the Gaytime ice cream (which admittedly did most of the heavy lifting) wrapped by a yummy deep-fried bao that gave it a crunchy and soft textural contrast.Lane 198 is a step up from the typical Asian restaurant with reliable food and good service, but not a dining experience worth travelling more than a few kms for. forkingaroundsydney.blogspot.com
