Came here hoping for a quick lunch. They didn’t have the special pho so opted for the regular pho instead. The only available table inside (there are only three tables inside) had not been cleared, and when the waitress cleared the table after she brought the plate of garnish, the table wasn’t wiped down. The pho was $11. The plate of garnish was pretty small. The bean sprouts and Thai basil leaves did not look fresh, there were some leaves wilting. When the bowl of pho came I realised why the plate of garnish was so meagre. The size of the pho bowl was also tiny, compared to other places of similar price. There was not a whole lot of flavour to the broth other than being too salty. The broth actually looks clearer in the picture than in reality, there was a fair bit of impurities in the broth. The pho noodles were overdone. On the upside, the beef was tender and thinly sliced…. Actually, as I’m writing this I don’t feel quite full, and I don’t think I have an incredibly big appetite.Overall, the dish was edible but I would certainly look elsewhere if I were craving pho again as this has left me rather disappointed. On the other hand, the pork rolls seem to be quite popular, and they are pretty generous with the vegetable fillings, although they include lettuce which is not something I normally get in banh mi…
I ordered a feast from Vietnamese Rolls through foodora as part of a social media collaboration (hence the effort with the presentation in my photos). Vietnamese Rolls is located very close to where I live in Glebe so arrived lightning fast and in the same quality I would expect to receive in store – not soggy or squished at all, yay!One of my favourite foods is the classic banh mi thit, i.e. pork roll! I’ve had countless pork rolls from so many different places in Sydney and unfortunately, this one was underwhelming. For $7.60 this one comes with mayo, pate, Vietnamese ham, pork, pickled carrot, lettuce, cucumber, salt and pepper and homemade sauce – everything a good pork roll should have! The bread roll itself was good, nice and crusty with a soft centre and there was a good amount of meat and salad. The part that let it down for me is that there was an undetectable amount of mayo, pate, and sauce, so was quite dry. Considering you can get an incredible pork roll in Sydney for as little as $4, this one tasted okay but was overpriced and not well balanced. Same can be said for the marinated chicken roll.We also ordered 2 kinds of rice paper rolls – prawn and pork + lemongrass beef ($8 x 3 rolls each flavour), which came with a choice or peanut hoisin sauce or sweet chilli sauce. Unfortunately, these were mostly filled with vermicelli noodles with a very tiny amount of filling (meat, herbs and salad). The peanut hoising sauce was delicious and made this pleasant to eat, although we have definitely made rice paper rolls at home that tasted better in my opinion. Finally, we had the spring rolls vermicelli bowl. For $11 this one is nowhere near as generous as vermicelli bowls that I get elsewhere, with only 2 little spring rolls. Despite this, the filling was delicious and the fish sauce dressing make this a light and refreshing meal.Overall, I was disappointed with Vietnamese Rolls and am not likely to order again UNLESS I’m really craving a pork roll delivered to my door… eatswithmarie.com
Prawn and pork rolls took a little while to make, which shows that they are fresh at the least. However, with only two tiny prawns and a thin pork piece per roll, it was basically paying $6 for a measly serving of vermicelli noodles. If you want an actual meal, go for the $5 pork roll instead and not paper rolls.
