Yakitori Jin is a Japanese unicorn in a sea of Italian cuisine aka Haberfield. It is cosy and seats about 30 people. Despite the good reviews, I found the food to be more miss than hit. Order: tsukune with onsen egg, liver with yakitori sauce, ebi prawns with spicy cod roe mayo. Skip: both chicken breast yakitori (negi, mayo) were very bland, Wagyu yakitori was dry, dashi tamago was also bland, karaage chicken wasn’t crunchy. I’m on the fence about the crab in thick chicken stock on rice. This was an interesting version of congee but needed a more flavour. Service was decent but not sure I’d come back for the food. There are more yakitori places in Sydney that don’t skimp on the seasoning.
Nice staff and environment. Although it is a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant, it still quite good. The yakitori are so nice and delicious. The other dishes are very special as well.
After hearing great things about this under the radar yakitori joint in Haberfield, we finally gave it a shot. Food, service, atmosphere was all on point. Sat at the bar which looked onto the food being charred on the coals, watched our yakitori selection being prepared – gave chicken heart a shot this time round and found it really delicious. The shabu shabu salad with pork was subtle in flavour and required condiments to amp up the flavour. The salmon tataki was the stand out and a must order! Beautifully presented with a selection of pickles and fermented vegetables. The gyoza was excellent. The charred rice ball with a chicken soup was another solid dish. Really enjoyed our late Saturday night feast. A good neighbourhood gem!
Authentic Izakaya serving fantastic charcoal grilled skewers of all types. Upon entering you are transported away to Japan; its the smell of the coals, the bench seating and small intimate space. The food is straight out of the small bars of Japan. Yakitori (grilled chicken) is fantastic, and please, do yourself a favor and order some of the available innards; either liver, gizzards or heart. You won’t regret it. The Meat ball (Tsukune) is an absolute must have and comes either with an egg sauce or topped with cheese. Order a charcoal grilled rice ball with Jin soup to help fill you up. There are also daily specials so keep a look out on the walls. Sashimi and grilled wagyu line beef were specials on our visit. A good beverage list is covered with various sake, Japanese whisky options and Asahi Super Dry on tap. Prices for food is on the expensive side so beware of the bill as it may surprise. If you are looking for fantastic Japanese bar food and drinks, this is the place to be for the inner west.
Can’t wait for the time I get to Japan and eat Yakitori just as good as Yakitori Jin! Upon arrival, you a greeted with Japanese hospitality and presented with a hot towelette, why can’t all restaurants be like this? I instantly felt welcomed and keen for the food to come. All the dishes were well presented and delicious, the juiciest being the chicken thigh skewers! We got the special which included 9 skewers to share for two, as well as a few others. It’s so unfortunate that yakitori is on the pricier side in Sydney, because I left satisfied with flavour but wasn’t necessarily full for how much we paid. I guess that’s what you expect when you eat something more niche in Sydney. Lovely place , I don’t fault it at all!
Food wise, it’s of high quality. Price is a bit of a high side but we walk out feeling satisfied. We mainly ordered yakitori and the chicken karage. Boy they were so tasty especially the karage. The menu is a bit confusing but the friendly staff is always there if you need any help/recommendations. However, my last visit last week, they have revamped the menu and it looks a lot better with pictures, etc.
Japanese restaurant in Haberfield. We were curious to try this restaurant after walking past a few weeks before. I thought the food was over-rated based on the other reviews I had read. The kama-meshi rice cost $26 but as we were told it would take 30 minutes to prepare, we had high hopes. I was very disappointed because it tasted bland and had very little chicken or other ingredients. This very small dish cost double what it was worth. The restaurant told us they are ‘bring your own’ wine but we found out when we arrived that they charge $15 per bottle for corkage! We drank the restaurant’s beer and sake instead and took our wine back home. The bill came to over $460 for 6 adults, including about $116 for drinks. This is quite expensive for what we ate. I don’t think we will return.
