We went there for a friends birthday dinner and reserved a private room (requested a private room just to ourselves and been promised its a private room just to ourselves). It turned out to be a shared room with another group, the two tables are quite close to each other so no privacy at all. The restaurant staff apologised and told us the owner actually booked that table and they can not accommodate us with another private room… However, the food is surprisingly delicious. We ordered steam bowl with slow cook congee at the bottom. First time trying this dish and is really delicious.Alright, nothing else to add….

This restaurant marketed itself as a restaurant specialising in Hunan Chinese cuisine – a regional Chinese cuisine which is most famous for its spicy dishes and the intensity of its flavour. I went to the restaurant with the hope of trying some genuine Hunanese cuisine.I will review this joint under the following bulletpoints:- Ambience 8/10: Good restaurant setting, place was well lit and relatively spacious and clean. Only bone to pick with was its obscure location as it also shares a building with another establishment- Service 8/10: Quick and efficient service. The most important thing was that the waiters/waitresses were able to speak both Chinese and English fairly well and were able to cater to my needs straight away. The existence of restrooms definitely adds another point.- Food – I ordered a pork belly lunch platter and requested for extra spicyRating 7/10The rice was well done, the eggs and tomato were well cooked and the meat was succulent and soft and full of flavour, meaning it was boiled and cooked properly. However the food loses points for:- Lack of spiciness: considering it was meant to serve Hunan cuisine the dish lacked authenticity in its attempt to uphold Hunanese style cooking. I had asked for extra spiciness yet the meat was still mild – because they had used large green chilli peppers (which are very light in terms of spice), thus compromising the spice of the dish. The same goes for the eggs/tomato which was also mild in flavour- They also served watermelon with the dish in the same platter which was a bit off putting since it looked a bit out of place to put fruit next to the main dishes.Price – 7/10 $13.80 for the platter was reasonableOverall – 7.5/10The restaurant clearly serves good food and has a good atmosphere, however if you are looking for genuine Hunan food then it doesn’t make the cut.

Hidden inside a hotel in Chinatown, this is a brilliant gem for spicy Chinese. Think Sichuan pepper, dried whole red chillis, chilli oil and garlic overload. Even a simple cucumber salad demonstrates it amply. Tofu with thousand year egg is another case in point, plain tofu doesn’t have to be boring. reviewinfive.com

Bad service. I had lunch there. I had my baby in the pram. No ramp and the staff saw me trying to lift the pram without any help.I managed to get upstairs, food delicious but you need to beg a smile from the waitress

Taste sensation. Friday night dinner – delicious dishes – had pork chairman Mao and spicy clam – flavour awesome on boyhood counts. So happy we stumbled across this treasure. Service also magic – no English needed.

Food is really Chinese. Pretty good. Salty and spicy is the main thing there

Brilliant authentic Chinese food. It was first time tasted real Chinese food during 15 years Australia. Brilliant food and great service. Have dined there a few times since opening. My favourate dishes are Mao’s pork, spicy duck, Steamed fish, Fried beans and pork trotter. Unfortunately I just moved away from Sydney. I will definately go there when I visit Sydney next time.If you want to taste unaustralianised real Chinese food, if you like to know what kind of food was Chairman Mao’s favourate,if you like to know the style of Hunan province food, I recomand you to go Chilli and Spicy Restaurant in George St, Sydney.
