Wow. Wow. And wow. Sometimes its hard to get authentic Asian cuisine but if you eat at Ho Jiak its almost the real deal. Sorry, it can never beat my grandmothers cooking but its a close second and some dishes even remind me of her cooking. What a great atmosphere here and lovely service from waitstaff. Highly recommended.
Ordered: the Roast Chicken with Rice ($16) & Char Kway Teow with King Prawns ($25). Both these dishes are classic staples in the Malaysian food scene and for good reason – they pack a punch in terms of flavour. Both dishes were made really well and you probably wouldn’t complain about either of them. For me, however, the char kway teow was slightly too salty and may be best shared with other dishes. The roast chicken was deliciously cooked but was unfortunately on the small side in terms of portion size. The food here is yum, but comes at a hefty price tag. However, what you pay for is the service which is impeccable -the host welcomed us kindly and provided us with a small complimentary pickled appetiser. They sold me on the free food. Lol. I would also recommend making a booking because this place is packed out by 6pm.
Ho Jiak in Chinatown Sydney. Very very ho jiak. Haha. Authentic Malaysian cuisine and lovely staff friendly service us and gave us some recommendations for the food. Laksa and noodle are definitely a must try.

Ho Jiak reminds me the time that I’ve visited Malaysia for the first time. They remind me of what my Aunty used to cooked everytime I visited her. Lots of flavour, from savoury to sweet. So far this is the best Malaysia restaurant in Sydney, I am supprised how good was my meal was with Ho Jiak.
We got a couple of things, Rendang (it was as good as my mum’s), Water spinach, Grilled Barabundi, Wagyu beef steak cubes (it was amazing) and sate (chicken skewers). Honestly it was great but I’ve had better.
The place was welcoming and friendly, the staff helps you with recommendation and they did a great job at that. (To be continued)
Lovely setting and atmosphere Ho Jiak doesn’t disappoint!
Ordered hainanese chicken w dry egg noodles
Was filling and delicious
Service was a bit rushed, but did the job and were v knowledgable!
Dining companions ordered Chee cheong fun and Nasi lemak
All in all a good experience
Prompt service but food came very slow (note: > 40mins waiting time and I was by myself!) Had the $35 set menu, which was quite a good value. The taste was good, but I personally found the main was way too salty and sweet. Give 4/5 because of the deco and the service, while I personally dont fancy the strong flavour of its dishes.
