Tasty and spicy Chongqing noodlesMr Meng Chongqing Gourmet is a Chinese restaurant specialising in Chongqing dishes. The menu is primarily spicy. It is located in the newly renovated 1909 Dining Precinct in Market City. There is ample seating inside.I am a fan of Mr Meng Fei who hosts the widely popular ‘If You Are The One’ dating show. If you haven’t watched it, give it a go as I got hooked on how ridiculous some of the girls expectations were of men. So when I found out he had opened up a Chongqing eatery, I had to try some of his dishes. We came for an early dinner and it was alreay quickly filling up. We were seated promptly at the front so we parked our pram on the other side of the wall divider. The tables were already set up with a tray, wooden laddle/spoon and chopsticks. We had asked for a high chair at time of seating but we had to go up and ask again when noone came around with one. Not impressed. We wanted to enquire about the menu as the descriptions were very limited as my husband wanted to know if all of the noodle dishes were spicy but noone could assist as they spoke and understood minimal English. It wasn’t very helpful. We also found out that we had to order and pay at the counter. We were given a table number. We finally decided on Chongqing spicy noodles with stewed beef (mild spice), Chongqing spicy noodles with pork ribs (we asked for no spicy and was reassured by the cash register lady that it wasn’t spicy), Noodles with stewed chicken and mushroom, and Deep fried crispy pork. To drink, we ordered a Mandarin soda and Coconut milk. When the drinks came out, I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping they were freshly made and that it didn’t come from a can. The drinks however did taste nice. Not very sweet. The stewed beef noodles looked spicy and it had the right amount of spice for me. The soup tasted meaty and was yummy. It had a nice balance of flavours. There was an abundance of noodles and it was cooked well. The meat was tender but disappointingly had a lot of bone. There was not one piece of meat without bone, I preferred boneless pieces of beef and definitely more of it. There was also not enough bok choy to cut through the spice. The pork ribs noodles was spicy even though we asked for no spicy. It tasted very peppery. It tasted okay, I preferred my beef noodles. Pork was soft. Not enough bok choy. The stewed chicken and mushroom noodles tasted okay. The broth was light and had some nice flavours. The chicken was soft but again, nothing but bone. It made it difficult to eat. The mushrooms were soft. Not sure why tomatoes were added as we just threw them out. It did not compliment the dish. The fried pork was yummy. It was crispy on the outside, juicy and soft on the inside. It also had enough flavour.Staff were plentiful but not available. Difficult to wave down.Verdict: The Chongqing stewed beef noodles and deep fried pork are worth trying. Staff need improvement on customer service and being available.

Pretty decent place for a bowl of noodles and some snacks. I am from the region where this particular noodle dish originated and I must say it is similar. Not the most authentic but probably the best I’ve had in Sydney. The original noodle dish with peas is worth trying but I do like the one with mince meat better. The spicy dumplings are great. Price is not cheap but not expensive either. One of my favourites is the mung bean noodle dish. This place has mostly spicy dishes so if you can’t eat spicy it may not be for you. All dishes are customizable in terms of level of spiciness.

Coming here first time with a group of friends on a Saturday night, plenty of seats. A nice little noodle restaurant, abit spicy tho. Will come back again 🙂

Not bad at all if you make the right orders! I always go for the pork intestine noodle, which tastes way better than their glass noodle, and the deep fried crispy pork. This combination can make it a 4/5. Havent tried any other dishes but not too tempted according to its ratings. Will always go for this safe option. And dont forget to ask for their stamp card, with a reward dish after 10 stamps!

Located on the top level of market city, Mr Meng is one of the newly introduced restaurants. Although it seemed promising, the food was very bland and did not deliver. I was very disappointed with the dishes. Service was very quick and food came out extremely quick as well. I ordered the chongqing noodle with pork intestine at extra spicy level. This was very bland and lacked any aromatic flavours. All I could taste was schezuan peppers and it was just plain and boring. I also got the side dish which was a mix of ox tongue, beef and tripe. This was also very plain and lacked any flavour. My partner got the braised pork ribs with rice and this was also extremely bland. The sauce lacked any strong flavours and meat was boring.Overall, a pretty sub-par experience. I definitely wont be back here!

Probably the weakest offering at 1909 and honestly if not for the decor or its location, we find it hard to believe people would come here again. Theres just much better Chinese noodle places in a five hundred metre radius than this place by a mile. Look maybe they have one signature dish that others dont do but unless thats the only thing on the menu, thats too bad as theres only bad dishes and such thing as bad choices. The wontons in chilli oil, were just fail. Its basically swimming in soup, its wontons in chilli oil, not wontons in soup with chilli oil. Then the noodles I mean, yeah okay nothing special here, and toppings that also were just thrown on. Basically nothing here looked like the kitchen took any pride in what they were serving…

Mr Meng Chongqing Gourmet, if you love spicy food and noodles you must try this place. I have to admit initially I was skeptical, but having tried their Chongqing spicy noodles with pork ribs & bean curd! Now I cant stop thinking about it! The noodles were cooked to perfection & the soup was spicy but so addictive!
