Wandered into this restaurant yesterday evening on random chance and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. Had the curry chicken, french beans flash fried with golden duck egg yolks and char kuey teow. Although the place bills itself as fusion Asian, the cooking had an authentic Malaysian touch and, importantly, the servings were right sized (not pretentiously small or mutantly upsized for Aussie blokes). The most surprising thing was the service, which is usually (even at quality SE Asian places in Sydney) brusque and brutally efficient at best. Impressed my Western dining companion by bringing his beer shortly after ordering. Impressed me with bringing the food orders shortly after even though the place was quite full (Incidentally, all were Asian diners except for my dining companion – bonus points for snagging an elderly Chinese grandma at the next table) – the kitchen is clearly Sorted. Complimentary prawn crackers at the beginning of the meal were also appreciated – fed the inner child! When we decided to doggy-bag the curry chicken, our waitress helpfully asked if we wanted extra steamed rice with it (we declined). Then when we were walking out, she pressed a takeaway pack of prawn crackers on us as well – totally unexpected in this day and age of modern Asian diners. And the total price? Just under $70 for 3 mains, a beer and a mint lychee smoothie – on par with expectations for a non-food court superior non-date night Asian fusion weeknight dinner.Minor things to improve: the chilli-hot factor in the mains was muted. Curry chicken was on the mild side (not a real issue in that dish tho). No chilli in the char kuey teow and none was volunteered at time of serving. That being said, when we asked, they happily and quickly brought both fresh cut chilli and a pretty neat sambal belachan. So all ended well on that front.Would happily go back. And the ultimate test? Yes, I’d take my Malaysian Chinese mother there.

of an influx of Chinese migrants to Southeast Asia throughout the history.   When you step into Nanyang Tea Club located. in the 1909 Dining Precinct (see full dining guide of 1909 Dining Precinct. here), you would be transported to the tropical Malaysia and Singapore where. alluring British colonial design greets.

Lovely decor. I’ve been here twice, and every time I have to ask for my steam rice. The second time I had to ask three different staff to finally get my steam rice. It’s so disappointing. The food was good too. We saw the table next to us refilling Bak Kut teh like how they would in Singapore so we did the same. It would have been nice if was known. . Highly recommend the Bak Kut Teh, it’s so potent and authentic just like the Michelin star ones in Singapore. I wasn’t a fan of the hainanese chicken rice, chicken was good but the rice was kind of soggy for my liking. We also got the sambal morning glory and laksa which was really nice. I definitely would come back to try other items on the menu. I wish I had more stomach space to try the durian mountain dessert or the Green tea tree dessert.
