Umi Sushi & Bar in Haymarket was closed for a while due to renovation and I have to say I like it better following the renovation. I mean look at this sashimi platter, all of my favourite sashimi served at once. Will be back for sure!
Had hot pot buffet here -including sushi. It was alright but not the best jap hot pot. There is very limited meat options to choose from. The sushi wasn’t the best either. The service was very friendly and attentive though.
Shortly after the service attendants signal to the kitchen, a delicate procession begins leaving behind a light smoke trail as a path is cut through the main dining area while the sashimi sushi boat is brought to the table. The overture to the experience, yet only the first dish, aromas of hickory wood, sesame soy and yes fill the air faintly. The luxury liner from the fleet of dishes features a smorgasboard of premium toro (tune belly), scampi, kingfish and eel. Umi (sushi) rolls of foie gras, soft shell crab in a rich purple encasing and the waffle cones of spicy Tuna with yuzu cream are novelties that add to the impact of the colossal boat platter. There are a number of subtle dishes that evoke a sense of grandeur without over exasperating the premium ingredients they use:The crunch of their cabbage salad is spun with light musks of truffle. A salute to the recognizable Tamago we see at many trains and roll menus is heightened with Menteiko (spicy cod roe). Cheese is a fairly modern advent to Japanese cuisine and perhaps the grilled scallops are a symbolism of the modernity Umi strives for in defining their style. The scallops are served in entirety muscle meat, roe and frilly membrane. Drenched in a creamy white sauce, its heaped with cheese just on the verge of thermal scalding. Theres a feeling of comfort in this dish and theres a deceptive plainness in these dishes like the grilled quail where the select few elements are allowed to sing their complete range of flavor. thenextrushmagazine.com
