Hidden in a lowkey alleyway is my go-to malatang place. Though it has less variety in ingredients, it contains the essentials that I’m satisfied with. What makes this place stand out is really the broth, they give a generous amount of it, and it’s much cleaner and less greasy than other places. Perhaps it’s the way they prepare it but it doesn’t feel like you’re drinking soup that’s mixed with all the impurities of your chosen ingredients unlike yang guo fu. Note, the standard broth with no added spice is already spicy, but definitely flavourful. Limited seating in this place so not suitable for large groups.
This outlet shares similar business model with Yang Guo Fu Ma La Tang which charge the dishes by the weight. The only difference is this one has the numbing Sezhuan style chili paste of you dare. Asked for medium hot and would say it’s a bit too strong. Will ask for mild next time. I can imagine I’d like it more than their competitor as the ingredients are fresh and the broth are more flavoursome.
